    hello everyone,
on my first bike a week now (px125 2nd hand) and the battery is dead. i takes about 30 kick starts to get going...nightmare!...so i asked a mate and he said either i left something on, the battery is a dud, or the alternator isn't working. i think the garage i got it in is closed till monday.
-Is it possible to leave something on when the steering lock is on and keys are out?
    -Anyone had this problem?
-why is the kick start taking so long to start it? (yes the choke is on)

    Thanks a mill in advance

Yes, if it has a parking light position on the ignition switch, but I doubt it.

Check the battery terminals are clean and screwed in tight. Use a brillo pad or old scourer to clean them (gently as lead is soft and lead dust is toxic!)

If the battery isn't a sealed type, check the acid level, if it's low top up with distilled water only (NOT acid, tap water, fridge water, rain water, boiled water, or any other old wives' tale)

Poor starting is usually a knackered spark plug, couple of euro to replace. Check the HT lead (Thick rubber lead going to the spark plug) is clean, dry and no cracks in the insulation.

If the lights get brighter when you rev the engine, the alternator is probably ok, but you need someone who knows about vehicle electrics to check it out. More likely the battery is knackered especially if the bike was left standing for a few months.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

    Hi pxnubi,
What year is the vespa px? Disk brake or hub brake? autolub or premix?

As ninja900 says, change your spark plug as a first port of call. It should only cost 3-5 euros! Check that there is sufficient 2-stroke oil under the saddle. Fill up the oil hole to about an inch from the top, and then top it up once a week when the level falls to the bottom of the tube.

The petrol in the tank maybe be ancient so use it up and fill the bike up with fresh 95 octane unleaded and away ya go!!

Put 20 psi front tire and 30 (solo) psi in your tires.
While you are at it, check the front pads for wear and tear and if the brakes are spongy or soft feeling, get a bike garage to renew them (or a mate who knows bikes :) ).

    Have a look at http://www.scooterhelp.com/ and http://www.vespamaintenance.com/

If the bike doesn't start after 5 or 6 kicks maximum then you are probably flooding it with too much oil & petrol. Clear the fuel system by doing the following...

    Turn OFF the fuel tap,
twist and hold the throttle fully OPEN, (YES WOT)
    and kick 15-20 times quickly.
Once bike starts up switch on fuel tap quickly!

I had a vespa px200 and 'cos the battery was left sitting for long periods I got into the habit of always kicking it and not bothering about the flat battery and electric start at all. Same result in the end and it will do the bike no harm!!
