    1. anyone know what this is? adaware and norton didn't remove it and there is nothing odd showing up on the task manager.

    2. my pc is boned. i did something to it and now it starts up, says "error loading operating system" and then restarts over and over...

i think i reset the cmos settings, but i can't remember. does anyone know what way they should be set and would setting them to 'load from cd' make a difference. note that i am extremely lazy, or i would alrealy have tried that.

Ad aware is an anti adware program, you should keep it.Clearing he cmos is done by using a jumper, not by changing settings.

i should have been a bit clearer.
the pc i'm on now is not my own. it's a really old one that i borrowed until i get my own one fixed. like i said, i starts up and then immediately shuts down. it only gives the error message.
i reset the cmos settings at startup. i think it was F2 or something to go to the cmos settings and there was an option to reset them.

that thing in the first question is on the pc i'm using now.

    1. Try this, Start->Run and type services.msc in the box, and locate the "Messenger". Hit Properties, and change the Startup Type to Disabled and stop the process if its running, I believe thats a security flaw.

    2. I think the MBR(master boot record) could be corrupt, try booting from a floppy disk if you have one and at the prompt press fdisk /mbr

That message is spyware trying to get you to download some more crap. It's not a genuine Microspft message.

Turn off Windows Messenger Service (this will not affect MSN Messenger if you use that:

Start/Run and type "services.msc" without quotes and hit Enter.
Scroll down to Messenger, left click it to highlight it then right click it and choose Properties.
On the General tab, set the Startup Type to Disabled, then hit Apply then OK. It's then disabled forever the next time you reboot (unless you reverse these steps).
