Glass Ceiling Advice

I'm realising recently that i'm pretty close to the highest level I can go in my line of work, future promotions will not lead to much pay increase, and there probably is only two more levels above me, and one of them is more of a sideways move.

Through the ceiling I see the managerial types, their ceiling seems to end at CEO level and pay way way higher than the technical ceiling I'm close to right now.

One thing is for sure, I don't want to be doing the same thing for another 30-40 years.

I've considered starting my own business, I've set a personal target of starting my own business in five years and am saving for that, but not sure what business i'd set up anyhow.
Was thinking along the lines of Newsagent or Cafe or something in retail (have previous experience in this work as an employee and plenty of ideas on how to do_it_better than my previous employeers).

Have come to realise, I'm not someone that likes being stuck in an office and secondly I prefer to be hands on and doing something physical (have hyperactive tendancies probably!).

Is 35+ to old to learn a trade?
A sparky or plumber would be right up my street truth be told, and not having a mortgage or kids to provide for am not that bothered about income.
Would anyone take on an apprentice my age?

I suppose its a mid life crisis! (at least i can admit it for what it is...I know i'm not going to be an astronaut anymore ..but i also know I can't do what i'm currently doing for much longer without going bonkers) , has anyone changed direction at an age like mine and have any advice?

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

It seems to be a tough call, but it ain't, you've got a better start than most who start their own business. 5 Years seems a long time to wait, if you've got the yearning now, trim the start dates back to max 3 years. You've got at least 30 productive years ahead of you and so few commitments, you're almost ahead before you get started.

CEB's might be helpful, depends on your business, if its a trade forget it. Personally I'm suspicious of these Semi state Advisors advising how to run a business when they've never had any relevant experience of owning a business, no experience of how to make money and certainly no experience of meeting meaningful targets (but thats a a liitle rant and outside OP).
