FFS, talking about Mcdowell and reforming the law and then the phone ins start.

Enter some auld one bawling her eyes out about family members losing their houses in the bookies. There should be radio mods to kick the slag out for being totally off topic.

No but to quote Bill Hicks..
"Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I ****, what I take into my body – as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?"

GL tomorow Nicky, what time is this on at? When is Joe heading off away to Vegas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭hotspur

There was some amount of crap on that broadcast alright, but at least the 1st male caller against casinos and the hilarious woman from "Irleand against casinos" or whatever were just ignorent morons, but David Hall from Gala interspersed his valid arguements about regulation and consultation with blatant lies about problem gambling and casinos -
Only 1% of casino goers in this country are problem gamblers? Pulled that 1 out of his ass.
casinos don't like problem gamblers from an economic perspective because they win money??????? ?????????????????

GALA are gonna lose credibility in the forthcoming debate unless David stops making this crap up. Learn from the more mature industry responses internationally about this issue.

Good luck tomorrow on whatever show you're on tomorrow Nicky, don't lose your rag to the assclowns who phone in :)

I heard this 1% number as something slightly different recently. It was from GA or Gamcare or some organisation that I expected to give a ridiculously inflated number, can't find the source now. The stat was something like "1% of players that try gambling online will eventually have a problem". I thought that was really low, if that is the correct number it shouldn't be a big deal at all.

Obviously this 1% of players account for much more than 1% of the casino's revenue, but still, the number seems so small.

That's because it's so far from the actual figure it's untrue, taking Britain as an example here is a quote from the book "Gambling and Problem Gambling in Britain" by Jim Orford who conducted Britain's 1st gambling prevalence study recently -

"...of those people present in British casinos at any one time around 16 per cent might be expected to have gambling problems (9 per cent severe)."

I have seen much higer figures from other countries, including 405 from a recent Canadian study.

My point is not "wont someone please think of the children!" (I'm off to the Fitz after I type this), my point is rather if those engaging in advocacy for the casino industry in this country just make up figures for these kinds of things (and Dave Hall has done that several times in his communications) then they are gonna make it easier for their opponents to punk them out. Lying about these figures isn't necessary and it avoids sensible debate just as much as the ignoramuses furthering a Christian ethic agenda of prohibition.

Sometime between 11.30 and 12 (I tihnk) . Maybe later. I have to shoiw up at the lyric fm studios at 11.15. I have spent hours talking to a very nice lady from RTE who has done the whole interview thing several times over and seems very realistic about the whole playing poker for a living thing. (She wants me to take her to the fitz :) I honestly don't expect too much of a negative twist to be put on things as Finucane is a pretty good interviewer but I have been fooled before. (Sky are assholes)

I think the Joe Show will be broadcast from New York. That's where he is at the mo apparrantly. :)

when exactly does gambling become a problem?
is it when it starts to effect you normal social life, or is it only if your losing the shirt off your back?

Talking about David Hall's points, "the money transacted in Cheltenham over 2 days equal to the total money transacted in Irish casinos annually", is that point correct, anybody know?

It wouldn't surprise me if it was.

David Hall doesn't know how much each the of the casinos in Ireland make, so there's no way he can say this. He just seems to be presenting optomistic guesstimations as fact to try and back up his arguments, which is a sure way to end up with egg on your face. He should be more careful. He's representing a lot of people who who could be negatively effected if he screws up.

Well done Nicky and Joe, both came across very well and that old biddy that rang in was just a gem, but tbh I was hoping for some crazy people ringing in ranting about their cousins next door neighbours uncles dog who lost his kennel playing poker....

Yeah I don't know why but I was told it was the finucane show. No matter it seemed like a very positive interview and a fresh change from the all the negative nonsense that's been going on. Just trying to find it now so I can listen to it myself. It's only got the fitst five minutes of the show up at the moment. I'll have to wait until the entire show is put up on their site but I don't know when that will be.

nice work Nicky, nice interview but she let you both off very lightly. i wanted a lecture on variance and advanced game theory :)

that biddy was bizarre, just kept asking her if she'd go to vegas....and again...

i suppose its geared towards a certain audience so has to be light enough.

    see you there! :D

Yep, good job. I liked the way both Nicky and Joe came across as not having a stereotypical gambling addiction, and were just two guys who loved playing poker. Considering the way that cards have been such a tradition in Irish life, I think that definately hits the right chord.

Did it take Joe a while to wake up? Hungover, maybe? :) I liked his weird 'fathers deathbed' joke (I think it was a joke!), pure Joe.

25? Official national card game of the Irish, I think. What about ordinary 5-card draw poker? There are a lot of people who grew up with the game.

Apologies there seems to be a problem there at the mo. The only way until I can fix it is to click the feed icon on the top right of the page.

    *Edit: fixed problem on site.

From today's Sunday Times: Ministers want the installation of CCTV cameras in all casinos as part of any regulations.
Good to see their in-depth knowledge of these things.
I know I've spoken out against casinos generally here before, but if this is the kind of nonsense coming from the government, maybe it would be better if things stay as they are.
I see they also mention limiting stakes. If this were to mean limiting the total amount a player could gamble in an evening, say E200, it actually gives the house an advantage in table games.

Huh? How can their mathematical edge be diminished by more play? You figure being able to reach back into your wallet for another €200 to play a -EV game is more beneficial for the patron?

Some old boy is talking about stealing hapennys out of his mothers purse to gamble with on "liveline" now have to go back to work but it might be leading to casinos again.

This wasn't a pisss take he actually said it, it's always the exes (ex gamblers, ex smokers, ex alcoholics, ex sex maniacs) with problems that is slowly turning this country into a puritan state, the smoking ban, MASS (mature enjoyment of alcohol whatever the fcuk that means) and now anti gambling, obsessive compulsive people will always find something to excess out on so banning it makes no difference to them they'll just find something else. 'I've got a problem so I know what I I'll do I'll campaign to have it banned'. Sorry about all that not very poker related but just had to say it as I am at work with a hangover as I am not a member of MASS.

I've got to laugh at people who don't seem to realise that casinos have been in existence in Ireland for well over 20 years. It hasn't just snowballed in the last few years. They've been here for a very long time, and now they want them banned but don't mention bookies, bingo halls, and touchebtting, which should all be class as hardcore gambling because of the amounts of money that can be one. To draw a comparison this is like banning guinness because of alcoholism but not heineken.:)

As a poker fanatic I am in full agreement that games of chance like Blackjack, roulette etc should be regualted or banned. This is house favoured gambling that does have potential to ruin lives for those so inclined.

Having these games associated with poker does us no favours. Poker needs concetration, intelligence and skill. Your regular fix compulsive gambler does not have the patience for this type of game hence the risk of life ruining experiences is less.

You will always get the good runs in blackjack that will make the gambler come back for more. As a newbie, you wont hang around forever getting your ass whooped at poker.

So called Card Clubs should actually become proper card clubs and stop using them as a cover to make thousands from blackjack and roulette.

I'm pretty sure it was in one of the links you posted up before (if it was you). A riverboat casino in Illinois was made to introduce this to prevent problem gambling but it actually increased the house's edge. It stood out to me at the time as making no sense too that's why I remembered it.
