I'm going to Venice with my son during mid August for one week staying in an apartment and was wondering if anyone had any tips, be costs, are people friendly or unhelpful, I have a small smattering of Italian, do many speak English? As I said any tips or info is really welcome.

I went there in may with my boyfriend

if you're short on money and not bothered about healthy food, a really cheap way to eat is just to grab a slice of pizza from one of the pizzerias on the way around. If you get the chance, you HAVE to go to this place:

    Arte della Pizza
    calle dell'Aseo
    Cannareggio

its one of those take away pizza places.Best pizza i ever had. the whole street was milling with people trying to get in and get a slice of their pizza!

also if you're going to buy a mask shop around, and try to pay the little but extra & get a handmade mask, not those ones churned out by a machine.

the best of the islands is definitely Burano, where they make the lace. beautiful beautiful. Torcello is not worth it. Murano is nice but you get a bit sick of all the glass shops

Emm Lido would be nice for your kid (im guessing he's under 15) because you can hire out these rickety out bikes and go around.

ill try and think of more and post later!

thanks a million for that, I'll bear all of that in mind, and yes my son is eight, he'd like the bike idea.
