does anyone know if the apple mac book pro is any better than last years powerbook?

does it still handle the graphics as well with the intel chip?

Yes, the Macbook *Pro* is better than a 2005 PowerBook. The processor is faster and it doesn't have the insanely slow FSB that the G4 in the PowerBook had. Also, it's got an ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card in it, which is rather nice :)
The standard Macbook, on the other hand, has Intel GMA 950 graphics... integrated :( Not as good at all.

GMA 950 won't run modern games (would run CS 1.6 comfortably though), but it's pretty much all you need for anything else.

And if you want to play the latest games, you wouldn't buy a mac in any case :)

As you are in Dublin, I recommend popping into one of the apple resellers in the city centre and test drive them yourself.

Might be worth waiting a month or two to buy as the new intel laptop processors are imminent.

It really depends specifically on what Applications your brother wants to run Niki.

Quite a few apps have not been released as a universal binary. So they run through rosetta which is a POWER PC CPU emulator. As a result they take a big performance hit.

Photoshop is one popular app that has not been released as a "unibin" yet, theres quite a few others.

I would echo the sentiment of the others to wait for the next series of intel-based notebooks. Or buy a PPC based one. They are still great and prices are better now than ever.
