Hi, can anyone tell me if theres a conflict when using zone alarms (free version) and skype? I tried to use a voip fone and it dropped the call after only a few seconds (maybe thats normal?), thought it might be firewall kicking in but didnt get warning...im new to this stuff.
Also is it enough to just have a firewall without anti virus software too?! I'm running xp pro, using bt's crappy 1megabit broadband. Many thanks in advance to anyone who might ahve some advice.

Short answer is no.ZA will prompt you to "allow" when it detects new programs.Just click alllow and "always remember".No further conflicts.Regarding anti-virus software.....yes,this is essential. There are many good packages out there and if you use the "search" function on this forum you'll find many recommendations.I use Avast and I'm happy with it.It doesn't have a firewall component so like you I use ZA.Some other excellent products already have a firewall component so if you go for one of those be sure to disable ZA.You neither want nor need two firewalls.

make sure you get an anti virus programme - Avast, Avg or AntiVir are all free and one will do the trick nicely. for my part i use Avast.

on top of this you want to get antispyware programmes. Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender and Adaware are pretty much essential if you, like me, are trying to protect your computer on the cheap, i.e. for free. Download all three of these, and like the AV programme, update and run often.
