National pay deal - am I "affected"?

    Hi all,
    hope this is the right forum...try to find more info on boards, but couldn't find anything specific...

    Question is: How can I find out if the company I work for is part of the National Pay Deal (that was announced a few weeks ago, promising a 10 % payrise over 27 months) short of asking HR about it?

    Is this deal a "right" I as an employee can enforce?

    Just wondering...

    Unless your working in a public company/goverment company, the Pay Deal means f3ck all to ye, I think.

    no, its a national pay deal - like the 3 or 4 that we have had over the last 15 or 20 years..

    I dont know the details, but Im betting we [we being the general public] get a 1% or 2% pay rise across the board..

    Other people in other industries will get more..

    Do a google search to find the actual details

    It might not get accepted, the Govt has tried to slip a lot of sneak clauses into it. Some of the unions are not happy with it.

    Nope - if agreed by all it'll be passed into law, and everyone will have to abide by it, like it or not..

    Oh please, get real! This was talked about by every group representing anyone in the whole country for the last 2 or 3 years from the Government, unions, and everyone else who wanted their say, over hundreds and hundreds of hours of meetings over months and months...

    How many lawyers do you think have been working on it, from all sides, Im sure SIPTU have as many lawers working on it as the gornment have, let alone the rest of the people involved. The govenment could not insert any sneak clauses like it was a Tom Clancy novel :)

    Im not a big union fan anyway tbh,, and always take what they say with a pinch of salt [having suffered at the hands of london tube drivers and their union for many years [my fave was their legendary request a couple of summers ago, and strike series, for wanting a 30% pay rise to work less hours as a result of new trains which make their job much easier - and given all they do is press a button to start and stop the train every couple of minutes, thats saying somthing!!] and listening to the crap from the taxi drivers union earlier this week!]

    Have you read the agreements? Our union has recommended the deal be rejected. They are not happy with aspects of the agreement, which on my reading of them, seem IMO to be aimed at decreasing the numbers of public servants and running down services. This seems to be with the overall aim of outsourcing that work, or decentralising work, based on this artifical reduction in quality of services.

    The pay increases if you examine them, are very likely to fall behind inflation if it continues to rise as predicted. Has your income risen to match the cost of living and inflation over the past 10yrs?

    In my experience theres nothing that politicians, will or won't do, within the law or not to achieve their aims or to garner votes and support. Never take them at face value and always look to the fine print and the hidden agenda.

    Theres another thread moaning about unions around here before and it ended up that people complaining mainly wanted the conditions that a unionized workplace gives, without the negatives of union involvement. Who wouldn't.

    True. But thats what at a first glance most people will associate this "Pay Deal" with. Not with the other conditions that have been slipped in. I can understand for many on low pay, or stuck on pay freezes that its looks like a reasonable deal on the face of it.

    tempest - I dont know what union your with, but I know [from reading some magazine today] that impact support it; so its not like its blanket opposition..

    ..and that all the unions said that the last pay deal [4 years] ago was crap, and the pay rises would be less than inflation -> and they were wrong the rises in that one have been slightly more than inflation :)

    I've seen it mentioned in a couple of places that the deal has a bunch of things in it, with regard to workers rights, that trade unionists have been fighting for years for; so its not all bad..

    All I'll say is that you should read up on it youself, and not just swallow what your local union rep says..

    I wouldn't be happy with it.

    I work in the IFSC and our company is making record profits and passing money from our overseas offices in order to pay less tax.
    I feel we would be entitled to more than what is on offer.

    I always thought the public sector should be paid less than the private sector as they have great job security and a fantastic pension.

    This being Ireland, we've done it the other way round

    Never took much notice of it before, as the company I was in had a pay freeze for a couple of years, and then I was contracting on my own so the agreements meant nothing to me. What were the estimates given? Where I am now the increases would mean very little, the real problem is lack of promotional opportunies due to recruitment embargo's.

    True theres a lot in there thats great. But its not all good. The devil is in the details. Whats given with one hand is taken away with another. Of course it depends where you work.

    Thats just being insulting. Do you swallow what the media says? Same difference. Why don't you read it yourself, I've read enough of it, to know theres good reasons to be concerned, about parts of it. Depending on where you work, you may or may not be effected.
