Can't connect with Airport

Ok - I'm pretty crap with Macs so there's probably something very basic that I'm doing wrong but I can't see to connect to any wireless networks through my Airport Express.

These are open non-password protected networks that should be there - but even though the mac asks me to I want to connect to them it never seems to be able to do it. There's also no signal in the Airport icon up the top right of screen.

When I go through the set-up Airport help it always starts by going through Airport Extreme Basestation options (I don't have an Airport Basestation).

I assume you are trying to connect your mac, using the built-in airport card?

When you say "There's also no signal in the Airport icon up the top right of screen." do you mean the icon is like an empty 1/4 of a pie-chart?

if so it sounds like airport is turned off (see attached)

usually when you click the icon it will show you a list of available networks

also check sys prefs > network > (show) Airport

depending on the network you are trying to connect to you may need to change tcp/ip settings

The airport is on alright. It's happened a few times - it will ask me 'Do you want to connect to open network XXX' and then when I click yes after a few seconds it will give me a message saying it's unable to join the network. It doesn't ask for a password or anything. Could it be that these networks need to have my IP address added to them to allow me to access them?

I think I may try a coffee shop or net cafe that allows wireless access just to see if it is working or whether I need to get it fixed. I don't want to fork out for broadband and then be unable to access it with my airport.

So your connecting to dialup through a wireless router ?
