    Very likely yes.

Both Chorus and NTL are now owned by the same company, UPC Ireland. They seem to be currently trying to merge the products (for instance BB is the same price and spec for both). The only problem with Chorus is that they are limited by the very bad quality of the cable which needs to be replaced in order to offer more channels.

I'm moving into a new development in Swords, do they at least put better quality cable into the new developments (even if the package is still based on the lowest common denominator of poor cable)?

    Often not.

That seems incredibly shortsighted. Is there much of a difference in the respective costs of the bad quality cable they are using and what they should be putting in for high capacity digital and broadband? I would have thought that in any event labour costs for putting in the cable would account for a good proportion of the costs anyway and that doing it twice (which they must know will have to happen some time) must outweigh any short term cost savings from using inferior cable?

Chorus, as well as most cable broadband providers, is currently upgrading a huge number of cable systems in Ireland to cope with bandwidth demands and broadband demands. For the last 2 years they have suffered losses due to the amount of spending they are doing on improvements and increased services. The problem is not with ****ty poor quality cabling, its the fact that they are jerrry-rigging a cable tv system designed with a max of 20 analog channels in mind and trying to route broadband traffic, and digi tv traffic through this. As you can imagine, think of the equivalent as trying to figure out how to send lava through a water mains. As u can understand this leads to numerous encryption problems, currently they use 64pslk on their upstream and QAM and ATM transports. They probably have a more advanced network than NTL in terms of the amount of new hardware they are using and the plans they have for broadband. I wouldnt expect changes right away. They are both now owned by UPC and a merger is currently taking place. They are laying off staff and creating new jobs and this will take till at least 1st quarter next year before this results in any major changes in either tv network. Plus sher they added channel 6. What more do you want? Only bad news is the good ole chorus local channel is getting the snip. NOOooooooooooO!!!!!
