I just bought a 3 button usb mouse today and it ain't workin. the message windows gives me is: "one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it"

I'm using win xp, service pack 2.

I've tried uninstalling the ps2 mouse from device manager, then restarting the computer with just the usb mouse jacked in but I still get the same message.

    Any suggestions?

Is it going directly to the USB port or through a USB->PS2 converter?

It's going directly into a usb port- no hub.

And I've tried it with and without the ps2 convertor.

    No software came with it

Try swtiching the mouse to some other USB ports if you have any others free.

got it in maplins. No cd in the box. it's just called "easy mouse" can't find any info on the box about the company that made it or anything....serial number doesn't even lead me to any websites that might have the mouse on it

Ok after a bit of googling, I found a few posts suggesting powering off the computer altogether and removing the PC power plug from the wall socket for about 30 minutes and then trying again, worth a try I guess if you cant think of anything else.

cheers ruu. worth a shot I suppose. I'll report back in a while so :P

yeah thats a standard electronics practice maybe that would help if not try switching it with an already existing usb device (keyboard/printer etc) and if it doesn't work it has to be the mouse or software problem

OK well none of those ideas worked. Any other ideas?

You reckon maplin's will replace the mouse with another make if I brought it back in?

If you have proven by elimination that the problem is with the mouse and not with anything else then they'll have to replace it. Do you have another computer to try it in? That would be the quickest way to make sure.

thing is I doubt it's a problem with the mouse because the system is actually recognising that there is a usb device plugged in but it doesn't know what it is.

Funnily enough that doesn't mean the mouse isn't faulty. Are there lights on the mouse? Are they coming on?

nah no lights. This is what I get for buying a mouse for a tenner that doesn't even have a company name on it.

It has very little to do with that really, it's just a faulty one by the sounds of things. Make sure by trying it in another pc and if that doesn't work then bring it back to them. It happens!
