Absolutely zero this season. Might be best to find a pub with Setanta and watch it there.

In Ireland, yes, shared 3pm Saturday games with RTÉ. This is the last season of that.

is there anyway of getting setanta on sky without paying for it ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭channelsurfer

looks a good line up of matches. it just emphasises what us non-setanta subscribers will miss in 2007 when they take the full saturday live contract from rte. you cannot get setanta for free on sky. you can get it without subscribiing to a sky package if you have a valid sky viewing card and digibox I think.

Just to let anyone who wants to know I received a letter from Setanta this week informing me that the new fee is €180 for a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

Had that letter here in the UK. £180 for 12 months.

This week Setanta Sports 1 has been on air for the full week as Setanta Ireland is. Not sure if it is for one week only. Probably is as I think they will cover the British Open golf that can only be viewed in Ireland and not here in the UK as was the Scotish Open.

You dont need to have an existing viewing card since if you don't, when u sign up they'll send u one anyhow. That said it is also possible to add to an existing card... given the card is registered to you as in the case of a ex-sub card or the address it was originally sent to (as in the case of a FTV card).

I wouldnt be surprised if the price increases to €220 this time next year.

I came very close to cancelling my sub. Half the channels dont show anything until the weekend, bit rate is rubbish on most shows (poor picture) and their Summer sports was atrocious. I bought it for the Rugby last year but hardly watch it. Their sub is very high in my opinion for what you get, and then they increase it.

Am thinking about not renewing it myself as my sub is up soon. Hardly watched any of the rugby too and not only were the pictures poor for premier league games but the actual camera work was dreadful and the sound/audio was not synched. Commentary came first.

The celtic league matches were dire for a pay tv sports channel the sound quality was crap.I bet nobody is watching their coverage of this weekends golf.

yeah, i am amazed that they buy the rights to things like the British Open and the Scottish Open. if you have access to Setanta Sports then you will have access to the BBC. what a waste of subscription money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

Not a chance I would watch the golf on Setanta. Yep mind made up. Not renewing.

And F1.... when its FTA to everyone on ITV1, with a bit of tuning...

i have also decided not to renew...the price increase to 150 last year and then to 180 this year is outrageous. and as everyone has said the quality of picture is terrible, and the commentry is just as bad.

I was watching the hurling this afternoon and the picture was dire. It obviously was an RTE production but who's fault is it? I was watching on Widescreen and the Setanta Dog, top right, had only the first two letters visible and the timer was mising from top left. The players looked out of proportion.
Last Sunday the Live GAA quality was very good

I couldn't see any difference between the BBC and Setanta on the Open golf for quality.

The Celtic Leauge. I agree the quality was bad on some games.

Michael Walsh says it will cost him €180 for the new season. As I said before it will cost me £180. I will be paying more for less. Alot less if you in Ireland have Saturday 3pm kick offs live on Setanta for 2006-07
I subscribe mainly for the GAA but then I could get a card legally and have RTE for £200.

I think I have just made up my mind on Setanta!

picture was good on RTE so i'd imagine Setanta

didnt realise Setanta were doing widescreen broadcasts. when did this begin?

You are right Mossy, Setanta are not broadcasting widescreen. My TV is set to widescreen. I did try Smart (should auto adjust to the broadcast) 16:9 and 4:3 and the dogs (I think is the term used for station names always displyed) were the same, players looked out of proportion and the picture was very white. This only happens on Setanta.
As far as I am aware this shouldn't happen but I did note in this thread a few complaints on picture quality.

I have no idea if RTE do widescreen yet?

Come to think of it is only the Celtic League and GAA games have picture quality problems for me personally. Setanta did show Feile na Gael and Peil na Og and I have no problems with quality.

Maybe someone out there may have a good reason for this and Specsavers not being one of them! :D

they do. both games were widescreen on RTÉ Two

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

Mossy! You probably know by now I am no technical expert.

What I think is happening is Setanta are receiving the live GAA games in Widescreen format from RTE.
Setanta then transmit these games to us in 4:3 format. Can this cause loss of quality to the person watching Setanta on widescreen or any other format for that matter?

Perhaps I should have raised a new thread in Broadcasting with this question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

I have just watched the highlights off the Cork v Limerick game. Picture Perfect! Something has been done. Everything fits on screen as it should. The dogs moved to fit also. Even a different commentator, Mal Keavney.
Setanta have obviously recorded it while transmitting live and done something technically to the recording before re transmitting.

But saying the above I flicked between BBC1 and Setanta Ireland (Golf) and both were exactly the same quality wise. Setanta had their own commentators though!

Can anyone expain why this happens? I am curious.

Looking to get subscription to setanta, as read in a couple of places that setanta broadcasts summaries and live matches from the dutch league.

Anyone can confirm if this is true?

Problem is that on website setanta it is not being mentioned anywhere.

    Thanx,

    D

Just watched Celtic on Setanta (Sub finishes in September) and they had one of the commentators who used do the football league with sky. Cant remember his name. Big improvement on that Jock Brown. Hopefully they got rid of him but he will probably surface for the rangers game tomorrow.

Yes, the brochure that came with my sub renewal notice says 40 Live Dutch league matches plus highlights.

Just wondering if anyone knows for sure what's the deal regarding mirror subs? I've heard something along the lines of it costing half of the main sub again to get Setanta on a second box.
