Ok, last few days the Dell inspiron 1300 craptop I have is having alot of trouble running firefox smoothly. ATM It's using over 81,000 out of the pc's 256,000 of RAM. Seems waaay to high, and when mozilla is running, all the other pc's functions take long to load obviously, and it's wreckin' me head.

Anyone got any tips? Iv'e ran ad-aware, and spybot, and removed anything nasty, but it doesnt seem to be related, or helped anyway. Gonna do a defrag tonight, but will that effect the 9GB torrent I'm downloading atm? (and yes, I have plenty of space for the file, and no, BT isnt eating all my RAM)

256MB RAM isn't a whole lot to begin with & Firefox is still a bit demanding on RAM though this is being addressed in Firefox 2.

Make sure you are using the latest version of Firefox 1.5.0.4 some memory leaks were fixed in these later release's.

Extensions are also susceptible to memory leaks so make sure you are using the latest versions of those or remove them and see what happens. In particular old versions of Adblock only use the Adblock Plus 7.xx line if you are using it.

Try a clean profile, back up your bookmarks etc. then delete the Mozilla folder in your account folder under documents and settings.

81MB is not a lot for Firefox in fact it's about average from what I've seen.

There was a thread on this the other day [thread=2054961498]here[/thread]

Currently mine's using about 123Mb of RAM. I know it's crazy, but it is reported and is due to be fixed in subsequent releases of the browser. I know extensions are a lot to blame as well.

This program lets you fine tune firefox for the spec of your pc/connection. Give it a go anyway.

Saying that, after you buy a 1300 you should really consider a ram upgrade (plenty of cheap places to buy it these days). 256 is fairly pap.

Mine sometimes uses alot and other times not a whole lot. Hopefully they will iron that out in the final release.
