This forum is the worse on boards for going off topic ! and Vectra you left lidl out of the list of off topic stuff :D

The recent changes in this board have made me want to start a wee (ironically enough, off topic for the board) discussion on how I should mod here.

Well I'm here to enforce the rules but it's a community within itself and ye can't exactly go posting to AH and linking it here saying "talk here". In a community you can't always just talk about the reason everyone is here in the first place!

So off topicness is bad in a thread say about advising a newbie on what to buy etc, but if it's a thread started by the regulars here and the regulars take it off topic, no need for me to turn into a nazi or anything :)

So long as everyone plays nice I don't mind too much about whether a thread keeps on topic or degrades to Vectra's shopping list! As I'm sure you've all guessed by now.

If you want me to do the powertrip banning-anyone-who-goes-off-topic thing I can, I do actually read every single post here (each and every one is e-mailed to me. It's crazy sometimes.."300 new messages received), so if ye want different modding methods different modding methods can be done.

As it is, I only intervene when asked or to change small things. I havent banned anyone from here and I don't particurily want to..
However, if this degrades into telling me what I great moderator I am I will ban everyone ;) I just assume I'm great and people who post threads fishing for compliments annoy the hell out of me, so I want to make it clear this isn't one of those threads!

You can insult me all you want within reason. But constructive criticism is preferred :)

    Your ever watching moderator,
    Fobia.

As long as the thread dont offend anyone, or upset them, I dont see any problems with it!

I mean, look how many modellers now shop at Lidl, and look at how much of a discount Vectra got when he showed em the advertising plug he made for them on the forums ;)

    If it ain't broke - don't fix it !
    I don't think it's broke myself.

However - and this is for all of us, rather than aimed at Fobia :
If we use the "Whatever floats your boat" thread (or any other thread we choose) for our rambling day to day gossip, and ripartee then the threads on specialised subjects would remain cleaner of "babble"

    Just my 2c worth.

Maybe we rename the whatever floats you boat thread so it is more obvious that the day to day stuff goes there ....

That's all the ideas I have at the moment.

the moderation is good. no need to ban anyone as its all harmless fun and no one seems to minnd the banter but if there is something serious then you need to act.
just my thoughts and i hope they help

I agree with coolwings. I'm going to rename the "Float your boat" thread (to make it more obvious) and leave it stickied, and if future threads go off-topic I'll move posts there. But that could get messy, so if possible, if ye wish to post about random things please post it in the off topic thread, of course you can quote another thread and even PM them about it or whatever. It'd just save me a bit of work!

I'd regard myself as a pretty impartial observer on this.

It's obvious that a friendship has evolved among the regular users of this board which is why a lot of off topic conversation and banter arises, and it's great to see such a sense of community. However from the perspective of someone coming here purley seekin RC info it can be quite irritating seeing threads clogged with this kind of stuff. If this happened on 99% of the other forums on boards the threads would be locked and someone would be banned. I'm not suggesting that Fobia should take such a severe stance, but the users should excercise some common sense and try to keep the chit chat to the aforementioned designated thread.

    Anyway just my 2c :)

I can agree with you on several points above
    BUT
if a newcomer comes on here ( which several have..)and asks a question.. Then they get an answer or as many as possible to the point..
The way I see it is that topics stay as they should be until the point that they get old (no use anymore) and some members  want to liven them up a bit..
Whats the harm in a bit of fun?
The majority of forums I have visited over the years ( and I have been on a lot over a 7 year period) Lots and lots of topics go "bananas" and nobody ever gets hurt.
I cant see the point or stupitidy of banning someone over having a bit of clean harmless fun between a few buddies.

As long as the topic or question has been satisfied, i dont see the harm in allowing off topic chat!!

    Example:

Someone asks why the engine is running but front wheels aint moving?

Someone replies and tells them to check their differentials!
A second person tells them how to check!

First person replies that it was the diffs and they have the parts ordered!!!

At this point i dont see the harm coming in and telling how I stripped my diffs in my HPI MT2 by trying to ramp up a board against a step (missed the board but not the step, 30-0 in 1 second flat!!!!

Totally off topic but true story ;)
