imagine you were building a pc from scratch for a relation (not too IT wise, so needs everything to just work away with no effort on his/her part),

what software would you install on it?????

    i'd problaby go with...

    xp pro, sp2 all updates
    office xp pro
    avg antivirus
    quicktime/itunes
    realplayer
    adobe acrobat
    power dvd
    nero7

Theres a list of "Essential Free Software" on the top of this forum, have a look through it, some good stuff there.
You might want to set automatic updates on Windows Updates and antivirus or you'll be getting calls every 5 minutes. :)

I am more into what things a pc needs these days, not just freebees, like i dont what him/her to have to download and install realplayer when i can do it for them, but then again they may never need realplayer

imagine you had to make 100 pcs, what sort of software would be on your checklist

sorry its late so difficult to get my point across

yeah auto updates and maybe tweak the screen saver and power settings

Ah right ok, well you will need some sort of adware removal. Spybot has a simple user interface to manage and its vital nowadays, better put Windows Defender on there too. Is the user going to be using the internet?

    Google Pack.
I'd disagree. Grounds: Most of it is not "essential". Some of it is just crap (A trial of Norton AntiVirus 2005, in particular).

I would definitely install ZoneAlarm Free version regardless of web connection type, easier to use and add new programs too than the piece of junk microsoft push.

Also SpywareBlaster another free pageblocker, also can lock settings in connections page to prevent auto-dialler changes.

    Winrar - faster & better than Wincrap(Zip)

    sounds good

but add vlc player and symantec security.

Maybe also get symantec ghost so your can make one image of that pc onto a dvd/cd and clone it straight to another pc.

    Its quick and easy

Usually wheni redo a PC i have a list of usual suspects
    1. AVG or Avast
    2. Sygate or Zonealarm
    3. Adware
    4. Spybot
    5. WinRAR
    6. WinZIP 7
    7. Klite Codec
    8. MP10 or MP11
    9. VLC latest ed
    10. Firefox
    11. Autoruns or MSconfig
    12. XP-antispy (Turn off all those stupid warnings and errors)
    13. PDF Creator
    14. O&O Defrag
    15. uTorrent

Another few others that are kinda specific to the PC but that would be kinda the bulk of the freebies
