I was just wondering how much money people reckon you would need for a year in Oz. I plan on working for a few onths over there alright, but would like to spent most of my time travelling around and seeing the place. So how much would you need to live comfortably enough and still have enough to do all the various activities and tours and nights out etc along the way?

    Hi gonementhol

That kind of question is a little bit like asking how long is a piece of string...

Had 3500 euro in the bank account in Oz when I landed in Sydney. This is a good cushion.

I also got other money from home throughout the year from Irish tax back, Selling my Irish car, Oz tax back and cashing in shares totalling about 6500 euro.

I have worked 6 weeks in Sydney (think i actually lost money in this job!), 3 months in Melbourne and planning on doing 7 weeks in Perth. No more working for me after that.

Before I leave I will have seen All of the East (Cairns to Adelaide) and West coast (Perth to Darwin), the centre of the country, Tasmania, New Zealand and Fiji (and a quick trip up to India for 3 weeks)

But to be honest, everyone spends money at different rates. I went a bit too mad in Sydney when I arrived and blew all my savings from home, so had to get a job in Melbourne working pretty unsociable hours.

It really is a case of bring as much as possible but personally I wouldn’t come over with less that 3000 euro. It is possible to come over with less but you would feel the stress of getting a job straight away.

You spend money very quickly when you are not working, and setting up in a new city each time is not cheap.

The trick is to get out of a hostel, and in to a house as quick as possible when you plan on settling in a city.

Anyway, best of luck - Pm me if you have any other questions.
