I know, this subject again

I'm in the market for a lens in the 10-24mm range. From what I can see there are 4 realistic options:
    1) Sigma 10-22 f4-5.6 (around 500 in the shops)
    2) Sigma 12-24 f4-5.6 (around 700 in the shops)
    3) Canon 10-22 f3.5-5.6 (almost 1000 in conn's !!!)
    4) Tokina 12-24 f4 (around 600 in the shops)

I know there are many here who extol the virtues on the Sigma 10-22, but is it really that good? I have read about inconsistent quality with some lenses being soft. For this reason, I would have to buy in a shop, so I could return it if necessary.

Also, according to Sigma's website, the angle of view on the 10-22 (102.4 - 63.8 degrees) is less than that of the 12-24 (122 - 84.1 degrees). Is this related to the crop-factor?

    Also, do Gunn's have a website ?

    tks

My Brother got the Sigma 10 -20 and personally I didnt like it , it had a soft focus all down the right side , this apparantly is a common fault , he took it back and got another , again this was soft , he then got a third and it was good.
Hes happy enough now , but me , I wanted to go Sigma cos they do the 12-24 and this fits a film camera as well , but now I dont trust their quality control so I have bitten the bullet and gone for the canon which I ordered of Tecknikdireckt on Saturday , for 679 ( Conns have the correct name methinks !! ).
Or maybe the price difference is down to canon as the Sigma and tokina prices are the same as the net.
I'll make do with 28mm wide for the film. I use the 20D the most anyway.

Fredmiranda.com have reviews from actual customers who have bought the above lenses and also there are a lot of sample pictures posted , for me these samples swung me towards the canon over the sigma.

I got the sigma 10-20 and didnt experience any loss of detail on the right hand side - that sounds like it could have been a bad batch. The sigma 10-20 is €465 in bermingham cameras if your interested. From what I remember it has a 100 degree viewing angle.

Another one for the Sigma 10-20 here. Got it ages ago and happy with it.

I like the 10-20 sigma ,it's half the price of the canon and half the worry of the cost.
Sigma works for me ,I can get shots that normally I'd have to walk kilometres to get.

what about the canon 17-40L, has anyone got this? It's actually cheaper than the 10-22 EF-S.

How much wider (in practiality, not just numbers) is 10mm vs 17mm on 1.6 crop camera?

Cambo ,go into conns cameras ,ask for a look at the 17-40 and try it on your camera ,then try the 10-20 sigma lens and find out.
They've always been obliging to me and let me try a lens to see what the view is like.

so I go into Conn's with my camera, check out the two lens and compare results whan i get home? Sounds good. Are you allowed to take the lenses outside of the premises? I can't imagine that there would be too many comparisons to be made with an 'inside the shop' pic - surely you would need brighter conditions so you could stop down?

Well if you want to know how much wider the lens is ,thats the only way to do it without buying both. I thought you wanted to know the difference in the view ,it's obvious when you try them.

Conns hire lenses and reimburse the rental cost off a new lens if you decide to buy.

The difference between 10mm and 17mm on a 1.6 crop is rather obscene. You'll get shots with the 10mm that you wouldnt have a hope of getting with the 17mm. As Brian said, take yourself into a shop and try both out. You'll see the difference immediately.

I have the Sigma 12-24mm ... I am happy with it, very good quality though mine is a little soft when shooting at 12mm with a low f-stop nuimber ... this is not really a problem for me since I use it for landscapes mostly.

The main reason I bought it was because I want the flexibility of using the same lens between a 1.6 FOVCF 20D and a regular full frame 5D or EOS film cameras ... There appears to be very few non distorting lenses in this focal range with this kind of flexibility.

Here is a review of it -

    10 - 20 is a great lens...Well, I got a good'un, and am very happy with it.

The chap that does www.lostamerica.com swears by the tokina though...And a Canon is a Canon...So.. :)
