I went to Fiji. Loved it. ..but I came on my way back, and I think it made a difference. The pace of life in Fiji is very, very slow.
First things first I suppose, Nadi is a bit of a kip. You don't want to stay there for to long. I used the Nadi Bay Hotel as a central point for my island hopping. Is a lovely hotel/hostel - clean, and the staff are very friendly. (Plus they made the effort to remember me, so every time I went back the sorted me out with the best room). I highly recommend it.
A friend of mine went to Fiji on the way out like yourself and said he found it very difficult to adjust to the pace of life. He said he found himself lying in a hammock for an hour, getting bored and strolling up the beach, turning around and getting back into the hammock - over and over. I was well and truly relaxed by the time I got there and did a LOT of snorkelling, reading and general lying about drinking! ..so just be aware of that.
I visited a good few islands and spent about a week on each one. I was just finished work as a diver, so I did a bit of diving and a lot of snorkelling.
The people on islands are very friendly nice people, Nadi is like any other tourist city - there are people out to scam you and there are genuine people - it can be hard to distinguish. I don't know what else to tell you, only it was my favourite place in the world. It was the highlight of my trip. If you want to know anything else, let me know...

Beachcomber is one great alright, but be aware it's a tourist island - that is to say, it a tiny luxury resort island. Some of the other islands will be far less developed but have better snorkleing and will have a real community living there.

I was in Mana, Beachcomber, Nananui-Ra, Robinson Crusoe, ... and some others, so I can tell you about them anyway.

Ah yea. You'll find it hard to spend your money, as there isn't a whole lot to do; that being said it's about 4/5 years since I was there.
