Corner fireplaces, dimensions/constraints

Our house was designed with two fireplaces in separate adjoining
rooms and placed in room corners rather than in centre of a
    wall.
I mean to go out and measure up the blockwork dimensions which
the builders have put together for the fireplaces but in general
can anyone advise whether corner fireplaces tend to restrict
the size of the mantle, insert, etc ?
I suppose smaller fireplace might cut down on some expenses
(which wouldn't be a bad thing).

Also.. we are considering natural/open fireplace in one room
and putting one of those modern solid fuel stoves in one
room. I'm guessing the stoves tend to not require as decorative
a fireplace. I seem to recall seeing in houses/magazines
blockwork or plasterwork which gives a masonry structure
around which the stove sits. How would that be achieved ?
    plasterer, blocklayers ?
