Heading off to south america in october for 4/5 months backpacking with the b/f. Only thing is my Mum and five year old nephew are coming over for 3 weeks at christmas and new year and we are going to spend it together somewhere in chile does anyone have any suggestions of where would be a good spot to base ourselves? Mum won't want to do too much traveling so thinking of renting a house or villa for the few weeks. Any ideas where, how or what to expect from a christmas in chile?

it depends on what part of chile u are going to be in!. i spend 2years there.
santiago is a very modern city like any other capital.. there is a place in the south called temuco that is very impressive. spent xmas there with the folks and on xmas day we went white-water rafting. there is a ton of things to do there. its an adventure area more that anything but my 53year old mum loved it! horse-riding through the mountains, quadbiking etc.
if u keep going further south, u can see punto arenas which is all ice and glaciers but is also nice.
if u go to the north, u can go to san pedro de atacama which is a desert region and is great also.
if u dont feel like doing those long treks, maybe take a first class bus to mendoza in argentina. lovely city and u get the full experience of driving through the andes!

    hope that helps!!

Its the height of their summer so the weather will be nice - not roasting, because climate there is fairly temperate. If you want a villa somewhere, Pucon in the lake district is an adventure tourism hotspot in the shadow of the Villarica volcano. Nice big lakes and mountains, big forests with hunting/fishing. Natural spas for yer ma, white water rafting and stuff for yourself.
