    Hi,

I want to create a little database of my movie collection... but I don't know how to do the following...

basically, I want to have a drop down list and when I choose an actor, I want "movie title, status, quality and comment" columns to update with data on that actor, is it possible to do?

    What I want...

You use the filters in one of the drop down menus, can't really elaborate as I don't have excel on this machine.

I'm pretty sure that would work though.

It would be a hell of a lot easier with Access.

If you are using a filter you will have to make sure that you put the actor's name in the left hand column of every film title because once you choose the actor from the drop down menu it will only display the actors name and that row.

It is doable but it seems like an overly complicated way of doing it. What if you want to have more actors per film?

smells like Access is required here ... Excel filters would be quite clunky, especially if you want to search on multiple terms.

if you have MS Access - run the wizard - it should be straightforward and you might like it

if you don't have MS Access - or you don't want to be a database developer ... try a freebie db like this one ... "http://www.movieorganizer.com/"

i'm sure there are many freebie db's out there ...

I hate access' query system, took me ages to cut through the crap and find the damn SQL window.

yea I'm no good with access either...

BaZmO, no there will be one actor per movie(usually a leading one).

    Thanks for the advices guys!

Well then in that case what you need to do is highlight cell A2 across to E2 or however far across you need to go and then highlight all the way down the page. Go further than you need to so that you will allow spaces for new entries.

Go to "Data" -> "Filter" -> "Autofilter" and then select.

A filter will appear across the top where you have "Actor/Actress" "Movie Title" etc.

Then you click the drop down menu in each filter and pick the Actor that you want. That's why you need the Actor to preceed every film title in the "A" column.
