Last night i was fiddeling aroung with my computer, and noticed that the gpu had what appeared to be a fan power conecter on it,but my card had no fan on it.So i decided to put on the spare fan i had laying around, reasoning that it could do no harm and might keep my card cooler, o how wrong i was.
So i put the fan on,turned on the computer,As far as i know nothing out of teh ordinary happened. The fan on the gpu ,did not start to spin up, and i noticed that the graphics card had not been pushed into teh agp socket the whole way ,so i pushed it in further while the computer was still on,there was no signal coming through to the moniter at this point. and then i began to get a strange smell coming from the computer, accompanied by an odd sound. so i turned it off and inspected it .

The connecter going into the agp slot has a iny burn mark on it now.

Every time i tried to turn the pc on the cpu and psu fans would spin up aswell as the CD-rom drive and HDD,but the motherboard diagnostic lights would not come on and it wouldnt beep either and neither the CPU or the GPU heatsinks will heat up. there is no signal coming through to the moniter either.

Then this mornign i was switching the psu to the dell (the pc in my sig) and the psu actually blew.a flash and a kind of bang came from it aswell as a smell .

Luckily the dell is still running and was not damaged( i would have been killed if it was).

Anyhoo i was just hoping you guys might know what went wrong and which components should still be working.

the pc components are as follows

    AMD Duron 750mhz
    256mb ram
    40gig HDD
    onboard sound
    geforce 440 mx.

thanks and sorry for the long post
    chris.

You probably shorted the agp slot by touching it (pushing the card in) while the power was still on, so anything with a burned mark beside it is ruined. I would say theres a good chance the mobo is finished.

Yeah i was thinking that might be it ,but was hoping that it was just the psu going before it finally blew.

Well if the fans spin when u turn the machine on then your PSU is fine. And if there is no lights on your motherboard hmmm sounds like its a deader. Might have killed your video card also.

I have killed 3 motherboard in my life. Its a very hard way in learning.

Yeah im really pissed off at the moment. I had just finished watching a good movie, and was tired. I shouldnt have been messing with it in that state.

Added to that, the Geforce 4 MX does not have a fan anyway and never did....only the Ti models do. :)

Let me get this right, you put the amd psu from the dodgy system on the dell?Do you have a spare psu to try on the amd?
The connector thats burnt,is it the agp brown one on the motherboard or the connector on the graphics card?

Have you a pci graphics card to try?
If it was me i would try a pci graphics card and another psu and also reset cmos just in case and if this fails, board is screwed.Chances are the board is already screwed but do above if you have them.

    Where in waterford are you,city?

    Regards,

    Kieran

Havok, yeah i know there isnt any fan as standard on the 440 MX,but there is a header and i figured that there was no harm in adding a fan.

kmb yeah i put the AMD psu in the dell, then it blew.I dont want to use the dells psu incase that blows because if it does i will be in **** as its the family pc,so no i dont have a spare psu to try.

its the conecter on the card, although it is only one of teh little paths. And i had a look inside the AGP slot ,that seems to be a little burnt too.

I have no pci gpu to try. I had already reset the cmos before the psu blew. Im just outside of waterford city.
