I work in an office where customers fill outt standard forms. These then are put into storage.

They now plan to install snanners to have access to such forms?

Why have are business not using eletronic pens?

I initially read the title for this thread as Electronic Penis. On a more somber note companies should embrace new technology and not worry about who will employ the candle makers working in the candle factory like what was going on with An Post not so long ago.

Because companies don't have enough trouble getting people to not break what they're using at the moment, is it?

A company should adopt a technology only if it makes sense for them to adopt it. If they're working fine with their current methods, they don't need to change until those methods prove restrictive. The last thing any company should do is decide to change their way of working for the hell of it.

First you'd have to look at the forms and try to streamline the input process to where you could use tick boxes and stuff to reduce the amount of OCR needed. Most likley you would still need people to verify the input anyway.

Or you could do what the companies office did and just scan in the forms without OCR but it sorta makes it difficult to cross reference things. You can see the pages but that's about it.

But it also depends if the customers would accept it or not.

But as aidan_walsh pointed out you should only change to new technology where it makes sense not for the sake of it. Even huge military projects usually fail to work any better than the systems they replace. And most importantly if the paper system doesn't work then computerising it won't either.

For the purpose of sales contracts, legal agreements, blah blah blah, it's a legal requirement to have the original signature in hard copy, m'lud.
