I can't imagine it'd be much more than the 760 odd euro it was this year. It certainly won't top 800.

What exactly is your reasoning for this certanity Ronny? I got the impression the registration fee will be what ever college decides it should be. Myth, you got any info on ways to avoid paying the registration fee, for example via grants?

Myth's on holiday. College only decide it to a certain extent. It's a fairly similar figure all over the country. It's increased a little for the last few years, but never by a massive amount. Therefore, I'm making an educated guess at the figure. I'm not saying that I'm right. Just my estimate, that's all.

That would have been before my time if it did. I don't remember it ever being that low.

it did make a massive jump, though that was the first year of the revised idea of the 'registration fee' afaik, i.e. we can't charge fees so lets do a massive reg fee!

I haven't come across anything in relation to any giant hikes in reg fees or any plans as such - so I'd say Ronnie's estimate is fairly accurate. Max it'd jump to, i'd say, is worst case scenario €850. And that'd be a steep one.

This is purely just from things i've heard bantered about, and I haven't heard that reg fee's has come up properly to uni board or any such like.

I don't know where you're all getting this idea of the fee being set by the college from. It's set at a national level by the Department of Education, always has been. However the reason that it differs from place to place is that some institutions have additional levies or charges, usually for a new building or project, which is separate to the actual registration charge. So last year the official fee was e775.

Typically the announcement on the fee will come some time during the summer (the conspiracy theory, of course, is that this is when there are no students around). In some cases, it will already have been flagged in the estimates or budget the previous November or December - but not this year.

As for large jumps, yes that's true - the original fee was 150 auld pounds (about €200). The biggest jump was quite a nasty trick, cause the Department cut/froze the allocation of money to colleges and then added a couple of hundred euro to the fee to fill in the gap. Bastards.

If you're getting a maintenance grant, then you won't have to pay (in normal circumstances; if you mess up the paperwork you might have to pay and then claim it back, but thankfully that's rare). If you have applied for a grant and tell the college, they will usually not charge you the fee when you register, but if you don't get the grant, you'll have to pay up at some stage.

So keep your eyes peeled for an announcement on the amount, but certainly I wouldn't expect it to go down from last year ;-) it should be this month or early next - the later the announcement is, the more anxious colleges get because they have to print up invoices for students with the correct figure on it...

presume you are already aware of this xeducat - but your sig link to Trade Justice Ireland doesn't link to anything except a "coming soon" page. Is it the wrong linky, or a work-in-progress?

Neither - it was a site that used to be there, it's obviously been killed (the site, not the debate over trade). Hadn't looked at in a bit actually.

... now that would be a result! Headline reads "Irish web organisation finds solution to Trade Justice: World Lives Happily Ever After"

anyway sorry for the interruption to the thread with my off-topic
