At the moment i have a moped and i am looking to upgrade to something a little more powerful. I have a provisional license and i have a 2 year no claims bonus. I am 23 and I'm looking to get a 125 in the next month or so. I have been looking at the new Honda CG125. Is it any good? Are there better options out there? Here are some of my parameters which could help

Want: light 125 bike (not a scooter), good all rounder, group 2 insurance, comfortable, cheap to run.

Looks and speed aren't really issues for me.

    Any help would be great.

We I had an Intruder and then a Virago.
The virago is much smaller than the rest of the 125cc cruisers but just as much fun.

I still have the virago mind you, so if you do decide on one gimme a shout.

I'm told (by an instructor friend who teaches a lot of novices and in the course of this has ridden all the 125s on the market) that the Varadero is the best 125 out there.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

The Honda CG125 is a great little bike. It would appear to suit your requirements too. Not as glamourous as a cruiser though.

I had a VanVan before I got the Marauder and it was a great little bike - easy to handle and pretty indestructable too..

have a varadero as well and would recommend it - if you want to hold on a couple of months i'll probably be selling mine ;)

very comfortable - i'm 6'2" and never feel cramped on it. great for commuting as you have a great ride height and fast enough for motorway too.

I drive a CG125 and got it for 1900 in Limerick (grey import i would presume)

Isurance is about 450 and kitted myself out for another 500 so about 2900 on the road for me.

If you are a big rider, (i am 6"1 and 120Kgs) it might a slightly too small a bike, but its a great little bike to drive :p

Thanks for the replys so far. I have been on the Varadero and its a little too heavy for me. I'm very lightweight. I wouldnt be stong enough to pick it up if it fell. Plus its a wee bit pricey.

I think someone mentioned the Virago, no can do. A buddy of mine was almost killed on one (nothing to do with him or the bike) but still, bad memories.

I like the CG125 but is it worth the money?

The CG is light and nimble. I think it is €2995 on the road from new. I think I have even seen a couple of couriers on them.

Hmm, don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing... :D

Probably good, because the bike is at least reliable, easy to drive, cheap to run and easy to fix.

Well, only problem i have with it, is that its a kick start so that takes a bit of time to start first time.

Other than that, you will have very little to worry about take it for a service after a 1000, get your chain tightened and buy a can of chain lube. I bought mine new so these things are just part of it. I also bought a Shad box for the back.

One of the handiest things, is that you cant carry pillions on it, because the max load on the back is 20KG so if you are learning, you wont have that temptation :P

I bought a Yamaha YBR125 about four months ago and highly recommend it. You should be able to pick up a new one for €2500 or less, try and haggle. It has no problem carrying an extra passenger either and is bigger than the CG125. It has electric an kick-start so you covered if battery is starting to go dead as well.

It's also good to drive with enough poke to enjoy it around town.

Why are some of you telling him to get a Varadero or a Honda CG125?????

These bikes are so bloody expensive its unreal...if the guy is looking for an inexpensive mode of transport I would certainly have to disagree with all those that support the Varadero/CG.

The Yamaha YBR125 which may I add is about 300 to 400 euro CHEAPER than the CG125 and at least 1000 cheaper than the Varadero is obviously the best 125 bike for this guy. I'm quite strong about this point because I was told over and over that the CG125 was the best bike ever when I was in search of a bike to buy 6 months ago but then I did my own research and came up with the Yamaha YBR as the best bike.

Seriously man, this bike does 250 KM to the tank which is 8 euro to fill to the brim. (According to the price of petrol today, filled mine from empty today). It does me for the whole week going into dublin. The bike does a max of 100Km/h and so you can rest assured that you can NEVER break the speed limit on a dual carriageway!!!

I have too too many positive points to say about this bike, it rides like a dream and it looks a hell of a lot better than the CG125. IF only the Varadero was a bit cheaper, as this is seriously good looking. But to pay so much more is just pointless.

Yamaha YBR125 all the way man. I got mine in Bikeworld and they did a great job in looking after me, plus they have a service where you can have it delivered to your door for a small fee. O and I also got a great deal on gear where they knocked 100 off the bike cost and gave me 100 for gear upstairs!! I dont work for Bikeworld :)-it does seem that way...just passing on good experience!!

who said anything about buying a new varadaro he never said he was buying it new and they are worth the money and to be honest if a bike only does 100kph and no more then it is a heap of sh*t cause you'll have trouble on hills and you wont have the power to get out of trouble you need to have extra trottle when you doing 100 kph

Suzuki GN 125 was my first bike & i couldnt fault it in the slightest
it would do 300km on a full tank, would do 70, was light & was a nice little bike in group 2

althoug if you have the money then the varadero 125 would be the best 125 around

Noticed the Yamaha tdr125 isnt mentioned, just thought I'd throw it into the discussion ;)

I second the YBR125, great little bike for the price. If you're buying a 125 you should'nt expect it to be going very fast in the first place! I now own a Fazer 600 :P

The GN was one of my first bikes too Madrab, loved it! They have also come down in price alot, not much more than the YBR. I got 80mph out of it, albeit just for a few seconds ... didn't want the engine to blow up. I think that was on the M50.
