Would any of you guys know which company offers the cheapest long term car rental. I need one for about 6 months.

Probably something the size of an Astra or the like...

Would you consider buying a used car and then reselling it after the 6 months?

Yes, consider buying a cheap used car with a year's NCT, chances are you will sell it in 6 months time for almost the same as what you paid for it.

Renting a car for 6 months doesn't make sense to me as it will cost you a fortune and is dead money.

buy a banger - my brother in law did this a few months ago.
Choose something sensible like a ford escort or corolla and you'll get what you paid for it a few months down the line and you'll have no worries about returning it to the hire company with dings and dents for which you'll be charged an extortionate amount to repair.

Get a sell and buy-back deal from a garage perhaps

Do you insurance on a 12 month payment plan, and stop paying when you're finished??? Don't know the legalities of that, though!!!
