I think he should bat at number 8. He isint that bad. He can play a good fewshots just like at trent bridge i think. He needs time at the crease to reassure himself. He could surprise the australians in the winter if for some reason Ashley Giles is not able to go.

i think he is essentially a better spinner than giles. However, Giles offers a consistant batting option at 8 and decreases the size of englands very large tail. With Simon Jones' weak batting eventually returning as well, there might not be a place for Monty in the XI.

Fielding is also a concern but he is working so hard to remedy that and had a good 1st test against pakistan.

They are just the considerations but I hope he remains a part of the england team for years to come!

It would be too big a gamble to push him that high up the order, he did alright in getting Bell to his century but is nowhere near as good a batsman as Plunkett or Giles and his poor fielding will see him dropped when the King of Spain is fit.

To be honest i dont think theres any chance of Giles getting back into the team,

Panesar seems a much more dangerous spinner than Giles ever was.

I'd much prefer to see Panesar retained too, as I think he's a more dangerous spinner than Giles, and I'm a big believer in playing the best you have.

The problem seems to be that Duncan Fletcher has slightly backed himself into a corner with his demand for players to excel at two of the 3 disciplines.

However, fielding is something that can improve dramatically with practice, and everyone says that Panesar is not afraid of hard work when it comes to practice.

His one opportunity in the field this summer, he took very well there the other day. But he's not had too many opportunities in that regard.

Remember last summer during the Ashes, how stupid Pietersen looked in the field, and he's a match winner.
