    Hi Lads

Here is some links of me working the heavy bag today...

I am working short bursts of putting power in my punch!

I am not kicking hardly as I got a bad ankle to knee problem and
turn on leg to kick is too sore. I hope it heals soon, when it does
I will post some pad man drills. (also my conditioning is bad right now)

It was a quite day in camp today, just some 16 year old ish fighters there, yet you can still hear the racket in background.

If anyone got an idea etc to make my bag work better, please let me know!

    Slow Knee Work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjEyf6HrE94

Example of the Fence + Attack
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrmxKhpUKWo

Here are am using "the fence" to keep an aggressor away, and the pre emptive attack with slap, right elbow, and knee, in a forward driving way
and its "fookin aggressive!" too! LOL!!!!

And for fun about 2 hours ago, this big elephant came up the road and I was feeding him. I tried to hold on to the bamboo stick and his strenght knocked it out of my hand. I always was a bit nuts...but arm wrestling an elephant!!

Very Man should have a little cute thai monkey! ; - )

The few thai kicks I throw are not very good, not turning hip in etc.
thats due to injury. and I drop hands a bit in some places.

    Chin down, hands up Boy!!

I'm sure you'll be hitting like cro cop in no time. Are you gaining flexibility through sparring and bag work or are you stretching on the side?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,248 ✭✭✭Millionaire

No, not stretching at all.. which is kinda strange for me cause I used to do alot of stretching and be fairly flexible. The Thais don't stretch at all, just a little shadow box warm up and then straight to work. I was thinking about it, and I will start to do a bit of stretching again... nothing feels as good as a nice MA stretch rountine!!

I used to do some fairly strenuous stretching prior to every session. Now I don't bother and I've noticed no difference, if anything I'm better off as it doesn't take up any time in a session.

Wouldn't mind trying Hot Yoga, yogo in a sauna basically.

Ya Barry, I used to do the 20 min MA stretch before class rountine too. I tend to use the shadow boxing to warm up. I find if I do 2 sets of 50 Hindu squats and some hindu push ups, I am ready to rock!

For me personally I have lost a bit of flexibility since i stopped stretching. maybe that too is to do with the fact, I have stopped practicing spinning kicks and things like that, in favour of working the Thai kicks.

Yoga is great... I did Hatha Yoga in Irishschool of Yoga for almost 1 year, and its amazing. As soon as I move to Bangkok, the first place I am going to join is a Yoga school. The benefits are amazing.

i love a bit of stretching, makes me feel good. never had a problem with it. i'm not one of those injury prone ppl though.

i read a report a while back saying stretching is of course good for you, but stretching prior to participation in sports where explosive movements are used is detrimental to your muscles, ill try dig it up somewhere

There are a few theories around about stretching being detrimental to muscles before explosive lifting/sports. Firstly you should never stretch a cold muscle in the first place, so you should only stretch after a good warm up. But stretching is detrimental to muscles in the short term, no matter when you do them, much like weightlifting. The idea is to destroy your muscles by tearing them and then feed them with proper nutrition so they come back stronger. By stretching heavily before you really need to use your muscles i guess it may reduce their ability to work 100%. But then again look at Ronnie Coleman, 8 times Mr Olympia, when he poses on stage, the guy can do the splits!

i personally feel most of the stuff that comes out of sports science journals is bull **** or contradictiory to something published 2 months before. i can't comment on other people but i can agree that stretching at the end of a session has always been much more benefical to me then stretching at the end.

i'm not taking a swipe at gerry or trying to paraphrase bruce lee but i've found that you can become quite competent at hitting bags and pads relatively quickly but be totally dire at sparring.

    Hey guys.
    True enough Mola mola.
But at the same time if your crap at hitting a bag/pads then chances are your not going to be very competent at real sparring!
    :D

I don't think I even seen someone who is crap at bagwork, being excellent at sparring.

You could say the same about most journals.
