Just wondering if anyone has any info about the divx player on sale 20th July. Specifically, I'm looking for all the codecs it will play. There are some mentioned in the advert but I'm looking for more specifics ie...codec rev. and also it mentions that it can handle nero??? Does that mean it can handle the new mp4 nero digital format? Also is it multi-region capable, if not is there a region hack available If it can it's a very good price considering that it has both USB and Card reader slots and is DTS compatible. Pity there isn't a NIC built in aswell, but sure for 55 bucks, what do you want!!! I have looked around the net but can't really find too much, hope you can help.

I can't find any details on the web on this player. I had an Aldi player from about a year ago and it was great - played all my region 1 & 2 DVDs, everything off the web on DVD-RWs. Only thing I found it didn't play were MPEG4s. Unfortunately it died a few weeks ago ... might have to try and get one of these:)

Looks like a really bargain :)
If someone knows any details about that player, please put the info here.

Wonder if it'll only be mp3's that can be played over USB? Would be nice if DIVX files would work also from an external drive.

How about from CD-Rs? And anyone knows what is the model of that player?

so would it be feasible to buy one of those usb cables that you use to connect two PC's together to swap files across, then have this connected to your TV and watch them that way?:D

I hope to get one of these on Thursday. For that sort of price, it's good. I notice it'll accept some media cards also.

Subway, just wondering how sure are you of this? Have you got one?

If it really can play from, say, a 4GB USB stick, its the business!

    Looks a nice player.
Be interested to know if the USB socket is 1.1 or 2.0.

My own player is only 1.1 which means some higher bitrate movies tend to stutter badly when being played on my memory stick or external HDD.

ive had players with usb ports before.
you can plug any usb drive in that supports the "mass storage class"
ive had a 300gig external hard drive hooked up to it, and a 2 gig usb key too.

the only problem is fast forwarding / rewinding doesnt really work due to hard drives not working in the same way as cds ;)

No :( Those cables require drivers installed at both ends, which you wouldn't be able to do on the DVD Player.

Handy to play divx/xvid from an external hard disk or large mem stick though. Must remember to drive to work on Thursday and go try to get one.

cheers jor el, to be honest that would be the only reason i would buy one of these as i already have one of those €40 amstrad divx jobbies from the electronics emporium that is dunnes stores

Anyone bought it? Any details about progressive scan option, Dolby decoders, or even model of that player?

This is a great little media player for €55, plug in a USB External hard drive/memory stick etc into the USB slot and it playes all my divx movies/images, mp3, etc. well worth it IMHO.

Does it work with more recent versions of xvid and divx? I bought one from pixmania with a usb port, and it worked fine for older versions of divx, one that didn't use any fancy compression functions. With the lastest divxs it stuttered badly.

Anyone know how to make it play Region 1 DVDs?

I just got an email back from Akura - they seemed to think that the players were set to Region 0 at the factory, but mine obviously isn't. They are going to contact the manufacturer and get back to me.:(

The phono connectors at the back are to be plugged into a 5.1 amp. The player decodes 5.1, but still needs an amp to power the speakers.

I got one today, though haven't used it yet. I wonder if it's possible to update the firmware as newer versions of Divx come out?

How does it playback DivX/Xvid with packed bitstreams?

Is the USB reliable for playing back vids from external HDs and memory sticks?

Bought this and I'm very happy with some aspects, memory card reader is great, usb connection is good. Plugged in an external hard drive, it recognised the drive but I couldn't browse the directory structure - any ideas.

Main problem is that it is fixed at region 2, but I have found this info, at work so can't test
To make this player region free:-

Turn the player on, press 'Open' to open the drawer then type 1030 followed by the region you wish to set (0 for region free, 2 for region 2, etc.). A message will appear in the bottom left corner of your screen to confirm the new region setting.Tried it here myself and it works great!

Can anyone test and let me know if it works

No I've got the chilli yamada one and while divx plays over usb it's not reliable (depends on bit rate, there is invariably poor sync between audio and visual) plus if you leave a movie half way through and then come back to it the next day you have a very slow fast forward process to reach the point where you left of.....it's handy to have but by no means has it done away with me burning movies just yet

Had the same issue, I had to reformat my drive to FAT32 as it could not read the NTFS format.

This isn't really an issue with this unit as you can just use the Goto function.

Excellent, that worked a charm. Cheers freetoair, now I can continue watching MacGyver :)

Haven't noticed it being noisy or anything, perhaps you got a dud daveirl? The USB port worked fine playing to xvid TV episodes from a USB2 hard disk of mine, powered from the port and all. No audio-video sync problems.

Ah Silvercrest, you've served me well these last two years, but now it's off to the bedroom with you.

Got one yesterday, fantastic for the price, reads well from my 1 gig memory stick on AVI / MPEG and DIVx movies (won't read WMVs obviously).

Haven't noticed any lapses in sound against the video as yet.

Also the software is updateable according to the instruction manual ... sweet for the price.

Free to Air cheers for the region free crack ... excellent stuff outta you!!

Thanks freetoair. I got a mail back from Akura with the same hack on Friday - just got to try it earlier this evening and it works. Yipee:D

Anybody else getting sync problems between sound and picture? I am, using an external drive and playing divx but if you push the right arrow button it will re-sync it.
    Still annoying though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,713 ✭✭✭✭jor el

I had some sync issues on two files, both xvid, yesterday. Today, i watched two more different ones and they were both fine. This was all from an ext hard disk. Didn't do the right arrow to re-sync as I didn't know that would work. May keep an eye on it. I wonder is it some sort of combination of resolution and bitrate that causes sync issues with some files and not others?

It only happened when there was a lot going on at the same time so you could be right also recon it could have something to do with newer divx, not to sure what version of Divx the DVD player can support.
In the manual, to update the software it says to go the the website, I did and cannot find any drivers anywhere, anybody else have any luck?
