I am in my mid 30s and would like to do some distance learning in IT as some further education, I have done the ECDL and have a only a general overview of computers, i.e. what I have picked up here and there.

Do I get into software or hardware/systems(?) and as I live in Kerry there doesn't seem to be a great chioce of night classes in the local colleges.

Has anyone used FAS Net College. for example??

    Thanks in advance.

I don't think much of the eCollege courses, except for cramming the test question before certification exams. Consider the open university they seem to have a great system for distance learning. I tried one in ITB http://www.itb.ie/site/courses/bn509.htm but stuggled to be honest. Unrealistic workload IMO, and I work in IT full time! Didn't think it was that well organised, though the lecturers themselves were great. If you have a lot of time, maybe you'd get on better. I reckon the Open University system is better though.

Hardware/Software you'd have to decide. Consider doing the MOUS and perhaps an A+ certification. Buy some decent books, then get some online tests to cram before the exams.

Have a look through the Distance/Part-Time forum, I'm sure someone will be able to answer your questions. The A+ is a good idea to start with, get yourself a study book that covers the material on the course and if you are disclipined enough to study by yourself, the A+ can be a stepping stone to other courses as well. Good luck.

Couldnt agree more the a+ should/would be your next step, the a+ book is about 60squid in easons buy it then get tested in a place just off merrion square,http://www.nightcourses.com/
the a+ aint so hard, dont pay E500 distance learning for it..

Yeah just learn the material (what I done) from the book, go to Thompson Prometric and look for a place to take your test. I think if you do it through FAS, they will pay for it for you so that might be worthwhile looking into.
