Is this hard drive dead?

    From a friends machine.

Was working... Now gives the following error at boot:

DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

Tried the hard drive in another PC - Same thing. Looped it on my system as slave - doesn't show up.

Is it dead? There is an LED that lights up on the HD. When inserted in my mates pc it gives a motherdrive error or 1 long beep and 3 short beeps which I uderstand means Conventional/Extended memory failure (http://networking.ringofsaturn.com/PC/beep.php)

If it is does anyone know any recovery company's as the data on this drive has to be retreived.

    TIA.

Is the hard drive set as the 1st drive to bootup in the BIOS setup?

Irish recovery companies are *all* shít.
They are all cowboys, who simply use cheap tools they bought online to recover the data.

Send the drive to the UK for (expensive)professional data recovery.
I have experience in this and would charge a fair price for the service myself, but that would be considered advertising and is probably banned on the boards :D

Not wanting to "diss" a company, but that crowd simply send their drives away to another crowd in the UK to run the recovery on it.

To the OP, if you know someone who works in IT for a mega corp type place who would have access(like I do :D) to professional tools (the same stuff the data recovery people use basically) ask them to do a proper low level(say bit level) scan and data recovery of the disk, save yourself an unnesscary 800 euro + charge.

Thanks for the help lads. I rang my mate and he tells me he smelt a burning smell when the hrd drive failing. Upon further inspection I see one of the chips is burned on the IC board on top of the HD. What are the chances of getting this repaird? He has a second hard drive which he thinks could be the exact same as both machines were bought at the same time/place.

How is the IC board connected to the hard drive? Is it a ribbon cable?

If between you and your mates you know you have the the kit and the knowledge. Then go there - otherwise forget it!

    Think about it!

What level clean-room can you boast?

i have done this before remove the board from an identical HD and swap it with the burned one, this also works on 2,5' disks. if you are unwilling to pay 800+ to have your data recovered then go for it you have nothing to loose.

dont forget the HD in the freezer technique (i know in this scenario it doesnt help you) but i swear by it.

look at hd label , see model no, ie seagate model 510xt ,buy another hd same size, and model no.3.5inch type. post model no here. is the data very valuable,if he just has winxp, plus games then just go out buy replacemant drive and reinstall windows.make sure bios set drive 0 ,is first boot, then drive 1, then dvd/cdrom.make sure the hd is set as the master drive, with jumper set correctly.what size is the drive in gigabytes.if you are careful you can switch around hd pcb board, for another identical pcb or get 1 from the hd company.if you post model no here you may get sum1 to sell you the hd as people are always upgrading.

get another drive of the same model. exact same now, even though the model number might be the same, the boards may be very different.

Then its a fairly straightforward job of swapping out the PCBs.
