I have 512mb in my pc, but i got 256 from a old machine. Is it just a matter of slotting it in and away i go or do i need to configure anything.

    Thanks

It should be fine as long as the RAM is compatible with your machine (and that your computer is capable of holding more), no configuring required. Remember to earth yourself and keep the RAM in an anti-static bag before using it, no skidding across the carpet or anything. :D

when you have the case open, and are ready to bang it in, tip the power supply unit or the metal part of the case, put one corner of ram into the slot at 45 degrees, press down the other one, till the clips click, and yatsee your done
p.s. ram only goes in one way.:)

You need to make sure it is the same type (DDR, DDR 2, etc etc,) and that it runs at the same speed, or the computer will limit the speed to the slower of the two you put in.

while we're on the subject, i've 3 slots (of 4) with 512mb pc3200 ddr ram... instead of buying another 512 stick, is it not better (and faster) if i replace them with 2 pc3200 1gig sticks?

4x512 will run faster than 2x1024, but you'll not be able to upgrade without replacing at least 2 of them. And 512 is a lot cheaper than 2x1GB as well:D
