Advice on a digital camera

    Hey all. I'm not all up on which cameras or make are the best but I've done my little bit of research. I'm looking for a decent, versatile camera, and a small size is a must.

    So far, the Canon Digital IXUS 65/PowerShot SD600 just appears to be the obvious choice. Its gotten very favourable reviews and seems to surpass any of the available alternatives. I'm not doing any professional work with this mind, just random shots. Stuff like Red Eye isn't going to bother me all that much.

    Like I said, I'm completely new to the world of photography, so I just want to know if this is a good choice? Are there any other (compact) cameras out there which I should consider?

    Friend of mine bought one of these recently, loves it. Quality of photo from it is excellent also. Just a hobby for him also,

    Generally speaking, Canon make fine camera's. there's a couple of review sites which would be worth looking at - www.dpreview.com & www.steves-digicams.com are both good sites on which to do a bit of research.

    I recently bought a Canon Powershot A610, it's very handy, easy to use & takes good shots (sharp images, good colours), I'm very happy with it.

    Great cameras... I have an Ixus 55/SD450, and I love it. They're a bit finicky for indoor/low light shots, but that's pretty much par for the course with these tiny point and shoots. Otherwise, you can get some great shots with it! All the shots I've taken with mine are here.

    Although beware, if you keep it in your pocket make sure not to accidentally turn it on! There isn't much intelligence in the lens mechanism, it will break itself trying to push the lens out, and then you'll have to send it in for warranty repairs. :(

    you wont get any better in the area of super compacts than the cannon. all the small cameras suffer from noise in low lights ( as do many larger non dslr cameras). its due to the tiny sensor size. this is prob the best camera you will get in that range. check out steves-digicams.com and see what their top rated camera in this catagory is.

    OK, all positive so far. Looks like I've found the right camera. :)

    I did get the names wrong in my original post:

    PowerShot SD600 --> Digital IXUS 60
    PowerShot SD630 --> Digital IXUS 65

    ...I just have to decide if the extra half-an-inch of LCD screen is worth the more money...
