I think you left a type out - unix sys admin/programmer.

I use my ibook for travelling - presentations and light coding etc.
I use my mac mini as an entertainment centre and for surfing/email at home.
I use my powermac for serious coding and sys admin work in college.

I'm very much a scruffy geek Linux-user and I purchased a Macbook Pro for two things: The hardware and Bootcamp.

I'm not a fan of OS X itself as I very much consider it a sluggish piece of crap. It seems no matter how powerful the machine is it seems to spring memory leaks all over and frequently stops to load something or just plain crash without warning.

Meh. I suppose its not helped by the fact that many programs are still PPC binaries and run through Rosetta. Give it six months and it might change though. As soon as I resolve my storage woes I plan to set up a tri-boot: Linux for work, Windows for gaming and enough OS X to run firmware updates.

    /rant

EDIT: Oh, I lie partly. Its grand for watching films, chatting on Adium or listening to music, but its woefully sluggish for photo work. :[

Macs are lovely looking machines and unfortunately this seems to be the reason alot - a minority I'm sure - of people buy them. I've seen people spend 2k on MACs and then use them for nothing more then word processing and internet.

Of course I'm not being biased towards macs, I've also seen people spend 2k on a P4/AMD laptop and then use it for something that could be done on the cheapest of cheap celeron machines too, but - so many people buy macs unnecessarily for no other real reason other then "I've got a mac, woo!"

If I won the lotto I'd surely buy a mac too but if I'm on a budget I'm gonna be sensible about what I choose!

Loads of mac users are journalists who think they are important. I think they tend to be more trendy types then actually creative people. Fashionistas and trend followers with expensive handbags and sportscars :(

Two reasons why I bought my first mac, a Macbook Pro.
    1. The hardware, it is the most powerful machine in the house*

    2. OS X. It is just fantastic to use compared to Windows, and its fast. It takes just 30seconds to bootup to a login screen and 3 seconds after I enter my password to login. Of course, Windows is fine too, but it has its issues as we all know.

Who am I? I am the scruffy geek type of course :p
I use my PC at home for webdesign, general internet browsing, photo editing, video captureing and Microsoft Office (as well as sysadminning at the college). I use the mac for general internet browsing, video editing, video playback (great for HD and DVDs), officey stuff away from home and sysadminning at the college.

I dont have any real problems with Windows, but OS X is just so much better. Its much less resource intensive compared to Vista and its visualy stunning.
