Take holidays for dentist trips?

Hey all,

Just a question on holidays in work. A few months back I took 2 half days to visit the dentist. I have just found out that 1 day has been deducted from my holidays as a result. I was under the impression that dentist visits could be made without affecting holiday. Is this true?

unsure. i do recall that you could take time off for doctors and dentists appointments during work hours, but whether it is up to the company to give you the time or take it form your holiday allowance, i cant recall.

oasis probably has something on there about this type of thing.

A half day is a bit much for a dentist, we can take an hour or two max, have to show an appointment card but i am almost sure its up to the company if they want to give u time, i dont think its the law that they have to let u go

I took the half days as I thought they werent coming from my holidays. Well that back-fired. Want my rotten premolar back

My understanding of it was that your employer is not allowed to deduct holidays for medical appointments but that they are also not obliged to pay you for this time and should allow you to have unpaid leave instead. Either way you were going to lose out on a days pay unless you have a generous employer.

Also, I don't know if dental appointments are covered.

Yep , dental appointments are not sick days (unless involving major surgery such as a Bio Oss Implant) .

It usually at the discretion of the manager. Have look at your contract or the HR employee hand book for your company.

Basically, if you take time off for a medical appointment you are not entitled to be paid for it. however, the employer can not force you to take it out of annual leave. You can take it as unpaid time off.

You really need to check out your contract for the rules in your company.
