CD Drives not working...

Both my CD drives have severe problems.

My DVD reader doesn't seem to want to read .cab files from games I try to install. I have this trouble with several games. It's a LiteOn make.

My CD Writer just plain won't read writable CDs. I'm not sure it's even reading normal CDs right.

I'm wonderring what could eb causing them. They're both totally seperate make CD drives so it's not a specific problem, and I don't want to go on a goose hunt posting dxdiag dumps if nobody's even heard of something like it.

    Please help.

    1. Will the DVD Rom read anything at all or have you tried other discs rather than the disc your game is on? How old is the drive, it may just need a lens cleaning or the disc might be scratched.

    2. What brand of cds are you using? Check if your CD writer will read any discs at all, chances are the lens if wrecked on that as well.

Neither Far Cry nor "The Movies" work, they both have the exact same problem.

nero has service that trys to control your drive speed for you, it can interfere with the playing of movies and the installation of games.
so option 1 would be a programe you installed thats becoming a pest
option 2 might be perhaps you connected the drives arseways? :D
but please post more info of recent changes youve made for some better help:)

download the specific drivers for the cd ,dvd drives, ie sony 500ua driver, and remove from device manager and reinstall, or just update drivers from device manager, hardware if you have a net connection to this pc.generic drivers dont always work.you may need to clean lens, get kit in pound shop 2euro.cd/dvd lens cleaning kit.

Hi,Have you tried a different ide cable? Are they both sharing the same ide?If so diconnecct the cd rom and try the dvd on its own.Are you familiar with opening your case?
If not do the lens cleaning first if this fails ,change the ide cable and use each unit on its own by disconnecting the other one.
What operating systm are you using?

    Regards,

    kieran

try get 1 cdrom on ide cable 2 ,set as master, there may be a conflict betweenvarious,cd,dvd,hd drives.connect it to the end of,ide, cable, not the middleconnector.
