A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion) is a relatively common atmospheric optical phenomenon associated with the reflection/refraction of sunlight by the numerous small ice crystals that make up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Sundogs typically appear as a bright and sometimes colorful spot in the sky at a position 22 degrees to the left and/or right of the sun.

Hard to capture, esp as I was driving... took these while stopped in traffic!!

No processing here... the top shot I adjusted the levels (auto) to bring out the jet trail.

Cheers guys, they were both taken over Limerick city last night. I was driving to the castle to take some shots, was really lucky that I had my camera on the passenger seat. I got stuck behind a funeral and was looking around out of boredom when I saw it in the sky, so lens cap off and started snapping in traffic, was really surprised they came out so well.
I had read about these before but never really thought I would get to shoot one, I was smiling all night ;)

No I didn't mean there was dirt on yours :D. Off to Valentia island tomorrow for three weeks and need to give the windows in the car a good scrub ;)

Perhaps it's cos I'm from Dublin but i would be extremely wary of leaving my camera on the passenger seat as i drive.Way too easy for someone to smash the window and grab it as you are stopped in traffic. They do it for handbags without knowing whats in them so a camera would be a very attractive offer.Just mentioning this as I'd hate to see anyone on this forum lose their cam, seeing as how we all consider them our babies :)

    Wow! Brilliant!
Never saw one of them before! Do they look like that normally, or just through the lens?

And on the side thread, Anyone heard of their camera being referred to as an "axe"? A guy said to me a few weeks ago that I liked swinging my "axe" referring to the camera. I'd not heard that before!

    Merv.
