right so i've a 1990 190D (W201) and the ignition barrel seized in it a while back. after getting a new key cut for it and with the help of a vice grips i managed to break whatever was causing the problem, not the steering lock thats still fine, and so now it drives away starting on a key thats as bent as an s hook that i can take out of the ignition when it's running. so with nct time rolling around i figure i better change out the barrel. i've gotten a new one but can't get the old one out. i know i've to turn it to position 1, where the radio works but the dash lights aren't on, and then slide something down each side of the barrel through 2 holes that appear. i've tried this an nothing. from what i'm told it should just pop out. i think the problem is a big black steel ring around the top of the barrel that i've no idea how to remove. if anyone's got any idea what i need to do,or any helpful suggestions i'd be very grateful. bringing it to merc is a last resort.

I have no idea, but you could do worse than to walk into a motor factors and have a look at the relevant Haynes manual.

    Get a hammer to it.

Have you the steering wheel off, all the covers off the steering mount.

a haynes manual isn't a bad idea. been meaning to buy one. as for the hammer, been there done that. only way to get at the ignition is through the front or take the whole dash and i don't want to go down that road
