is this a better indication who the best poker player in the world is instead of the main event

I dont think you will find it out with any single tournament. Its all limit poker so you have to catch hands late on to make the final table. Since it is such a smaller field, the odds of a better/more well known player winning the HORSE are obviously better than the main event.

i think its a bit mad that they are playing for a horse. Id imagine its a pretty fast one all the same.

Yeah i know thats why i said you would have to catch a lot hands to make the final table. I would love to see a final table with all the games shown on TV. I think it would would make far more interesting viewing.

Agreed. I think its a bit dumb to change the format for the final table. I presume it was the TV people who wanted no-limit.

forgive my ignorance but wtf is a HORSe tournament?? Is it like a round of each or something?

holdem, omaha, razz (where u have to make the worst 5 card hand poss), stud and 8 or better (omahi hi-lo) AFAIK.

8 or better (omahi hi-lo) AFAIK.

It's stud hi/lo AFAIK. A truly great game. Onlin stud hi/lo is an absolute goldmine if you have any sort of rudimentary grasp. Which I barely do!!

Why are people playing this tournament if it just reverts to holdem at ft? Players need to start exercising their player power unless the tv is picking up the juice or adding prize money why should the format be changed? It will inevitably favour whoever is not as good an allrounder.

8 or better is Omaha hi/Lo. Razz is stud low

absolutely. I think this is a total disgrace. Its not like there isnt enough NLH on tv already.

Players needs to cop themselves on refuse to play if they are going to be like this. Unfortunately I think this is only the beginning of the bull**** from Harrahs.

    In this WSOP event it's
Hold'em, Omaha/8, Razz, Stud, Stud Eight or Better

This is for the poor people who think that poker consists entirely of Hold'em and would be confused, nay upset, to see a HORSE tournie.

Who would watch a final table of anything but hold'em? All the other games are (from a TV perspective) boring and too difficult to understand.

Even before Harrahs were involved, the HORSE final table was NLH. When Scott Fischman won it in 2003 it was all NLH for the final table

here's the final table line up

    Doyle Brunson
    Phil Ivey
    Chip Reese
    Jim Bechtal
    Andy Bloch
    David Singer
    T.J Cloutier
    Dewey Tomko
    Patrik Antonius

    Now there's a final table

this is a tourney where the people who play mixed games have a big advantage I just dont understand why thry are prepared to just give that up when it gets to the serious money. Truth is everyone in that tourney probably plays excellent NLH but most will probably have a weak spot in one of the other games surely if you run a horse tournament to find the best all rounder the ft has to be horse as well, otherwise why not just up the main event buyin to 50k?

I would love to watch a horse final table personally I would find it far more interesting than another nlh tv show.

Edit: If all they want is a pro heavy nlh final table they allready get that with the TOC.

what a final table...i fancy Ivey, great see Doyle there

AFAIK it's NL holdem on the ft for 2 reasons. Firstly the TV and secondly the fact that the game is to see who is the best player over different types of poker. Making the end of the tournament NL makes it hard for a limit specialist to do well!

Horse is really a great 'game'. Razz is silly though.

Buts thats the nature of HORSE it's all limit so changing it to NLH just undermines the tournament. Limit holdem would be a welcome change to the final table without viewers getting bogged down in rules.

Yep but it's a test of overall poker ability and not just limit poker ability.

surely theres enough no limit events for that
id like to see the final table played out like the rest of the tournament

I'd like to see chip reese win. IMO he is one of the best all rounders of all time. Now that he has such a chip elad I find it hard to see past him despite the fact that he probably got this far on his limit and H/L split skills. .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,993 ✭✭✭Trippie

chip reese is heads up against andy bloch with phil ivey busting out in third

I heard that reasoning before, but the stud and omaha final tables I've seen from ESPN don't appear to have any problems. I know they've shown razz in the past too.

Heads up razz is very mechanical, but an interesting exercise in a very simplified form of poker IMO.

    What you mean by interesting?
The game is so simple if you have any cop on.
You playing Stud/Razz/Stud HiLo at all?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 10,501 Mod ✭✭✭✭ecksor

I mean interesting in that the simplified nature of it makes it a good form for analysing some problems such as correct bluffing frequency, when it's incorrect to bet heads up with the best hand etc.

I play a fair bit of stud online. Occasionally play hilo but not very often since it isn't always easy to find a game.

    chip reese just won it
