    Wonder if someone can help.
We are currently using static IP addressing but are looking to go to DHCP.
I have setup DHCP on Domain controller, authorised it and set a scope.
Gone to a test client, set all settings to automatic IP addressing but no matter what I do, "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" etc, the test client will not pick up a DHCP address.

    Anyone any ideas?

    Thanks

Is the client on the same IP subnet as the DHCP server?

Wouldn't the DHCP server dictate the subnet anyway?

tbh I'd check that you've not got a firewall blocking the required ports... (67?)
Have a looky see with a packet sniffer to see if the DHCP requests are getting through.

Yes, all on the same subnet.

There is a direct connection between the Domain controller and the client via a switch. On static IP addressing, pinging between machines is not a problem.

Will give the packet sniffer a go. Can you recommend one for this purpose?

    Thanks

If there's a router between the test client and the server it will be blocking the DHCP broadcasts unless its configured to allow them through. Sounds like zefer is setting this up in a business environment so this might well be the case.

It is a business environment but there is no router between client and server.
    Will give ethereal a go.

    Thanks

Surely a router would be seperating network segments rather than IP subnets though... considering you could have subnets that span segments without needing DHCP at all.
    I'll get me coat.

Did you check and make sure the DHCP service is running?

    Have you Activated the Scope?

Does your Event log give you any messages?

    Yep, running fine.

    Have you Activated the Scope?

    Yes, activated scope.

Does your Event log give you any messages?

No error messages from Event Log that are to do with DHCP.

Looking at the server, all seems to be working fine.. Cant figure out what is going wrong.

Have you restarted you client machine after switching from Static to Dynamic IP. They usually pick up an the IP without restarting but the odd time they need a restart.

I'm sure you have but just in case.....

Yep, several times. Just keeps picking up a 169 address

Double check that the scope is active, that has been known to catch some people out.

Yeah that's the auto-configuration address alright.

Can you access shared folders on the dhcp server machine while using static ip? If you don't have permissions to access the machine you may not get an IP assigned by it.

If you are using XP/2003 disable windows firewall on both machines (server and client) for a short while to see if this might be blocking it. Also if you have any thing like norton Internet security on either machine disable this just to test if it's blocking it.

Just to clarify 1 point to be on the safe side

You have to Authorise the server and Activate the scope, two different steps.

Can you post the configuration of the scope you made

    Just figured it out.

Turns out it was anti virus software on the server blocking it!

    Cheers for all your help

ah could have been worse... could have been not restarting the client. what anti virus was it? always handy to know what blocked it in case someone else has a similiar problem :D
