Server Backups

Help needed folks. Server running 2003 and as the factory is getting bigger its exceeding the 40gb capacity of the tapes we're using. Its running Veritas Backup software. Found this on Elara. Its 72gb. A lot of expansion is expected in the next year or two so will 72gb be enough? What's the next logical progression from here? I'd appreciate some informed opinions!
Also, is it possible just to use something like a 300gb external drive and use it for the backups? maybe setup a folder for each day etc.. If this would work it would be a very cheap alternative! To get 200gb backup's on tape its nearly €1500 here! Again all informed opinions greatly appreciated!

If you upgrade to the 200gb tape, you'll be future proofed for quite some time, while upgrading to 72GB, you might need to replace this sooner.

    72GB - I'd look at removable drives.

ntbackup in windows is quite good at backing up to file, but it's fairly slow (40GB might take a few hours on slow machine, maybe) and doesn't compress the backup, but hey you can do that with NTFS.

IMHO the key advantage of IDE drives as backup is the ease of restoring files, you aren't tied to a particular firmware revision of a particular brand of tape unit (in the old days it could be worse - a misaligned head could mean your tapes would be difficult to read on other drives of the same batch)

one of the key advantages of tapes is that can hold more info than hard drives, but it doesn't apply in your case.

You could get a 5 1/4 USB2 external bay and put a hard drive caddy in it.

depends on how far you need to go back - do you want to keep monthly backups off site ??

72GB depending on compression may also be DVD able for monthly backups

remember to stop the USB drive before powering it down ;)

i just installed a REV 280GB autoloader for a client yesterday. They bought the USB version and its comes with Arcserve OEM version. They insist on doing a full nightly and it has cut their backup time from 6 hours down to 2.5 hours. (they were using a 36/72 GB DAT drive). Might be worth looking at that.

Iomega also do a standalone rackmountable unit and a 1000GB version.
