Scratched disc?

Hey, I have a dvd-r with some really important junk on it, but it is badly scratched, and even though the data shows up fine in my computer, one of the main folders appears empty, when I try to copy/paste in onto the computer, from the dvd, I get an error. Is there any chance of finding a way of getting the disc to work long enough to transfer the data over?

    Cheers.

You could try and wipe it with a lint free cloth(if you havent already to try and clean it a bit better) or maybe try it in a mates dvd-rom drive and see if theres any difference.

Are we talking a scratch thats actually gone all the way through to where the data has stored or just a scratch in the protective plastic?

If it's just the plastic buy a disc resurfacer, they work wonders.

Thanks, but I have already cleaned it, with disc cleaner fluid too, also tried in 3 dvd rom drives, I guess it's screwed. :(

Heard trick off mate in the know. rub shampoo in2 scratches. it fills the voids. worked for me on ps2 disk. ended up having 2 buy disk, but it worked short term.

My recommendation would be first back up whatever you can off the disc, and then try Brasso polish, I used this before on a scratch and it took it of enough for me to read the disc and back it up. The brasso is used to shine metal like a doorknocker etc and works wonders on a disc. Or you could buy a special disk thingy as layke said.

If you are going to use Brasso, use very little or you will be left with no disc at all. :)

before you polish up your disc brighter than the sun:eek: why not try the software way, goto www.freewarefiles.com
and have a look for a corrupt disc recovery prog, failing that you can pick up a little cheap spindle machine(plastic) that repairs scratchs with a twist in your locul pc shop eg dixons pc world

try isobuster or similar to try and extract the raw data from the disc.

had a dvd that that a couple of scratches on it making a few files unreadable. used said program to extract the data and was able to mount it and reburn it.

actually the polish does work!!!!Kids have a habit of scratching the ps2 games and one light rub of polish does the job.Think it fills in the voids.

Anyway, thats what i have done in the up to now.Of course i am talking of light scratches.

In my experience some strong alcohol on a cloth works really well for fixing scratched discs, just be careful not too rub to much disc away.
