Peculiar Internet conection problem

    Hi all,

I signed up with Chorus three weeks ago and on two occassions since I have completly lost my internet conection. That is to say,I opened up Control Panel/Network Connections and the Local Area 14 icon had disappeared.I rang Chorus and a full reinstall of the drivers was required to re-establish connection. It happenned again this morning and I had to go through the same ritual.

Chorus think it could be a virus issue although I use Avast/Ewido/ZA/Spybot/Ad-Aware....my system is sqweeky clean. They also suggest a driver update for the network card but since this system was built for me I have no idea what they are talking about or where to look.

Does this problem look familiar to any of the Board members today?

    Abit "AV8" Mobo
    AMD 64bit Athlon 3500+
    1 Gbt Dual Channel Ram
    ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256mb
    Dell 19" CRT
    Saitek "EVO"
    XP Pro.SP2

    Local area connection 14?
What is that-do you have 13 others?

I assume chorus use a modem connected to the telephone line.
Did you have internet access before Chorus and did you have any problems?
You have too many pieces of AV software installed so I would decide on a good AV solution-like avg in conjunction with one of the spyware removers.
Make sure everything is up to date and run a full system scan.

    Hi Kippy,

    thanks for getting back.

no...just local area 14,no others.Chorus is Cable.BT before them, telephone line no probs. With regards to security Avast does not have its own firewall hence ZA.Spybot and Ad-Aware are standard anti spyware utilities and Ewido I use because of the growing threat of malware.I'm happy with my set up in that department.

Just a point to add to my opening remarks....there is no warning dialogue or sound that preceeds the loss of connection.Nothing to indicate the modem is not working correctly. On both occasions the fault occurred once the PC had booted up so (I'm guessing here) whatever is corrupting it is taking place during shut down or boot up.

    That's a very weird problem you're having...

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_HyperionPro_V509A.zip - Chipset Drivers. Should update your network card drivers as part of the package.

While you're at it youd might as well update your graphics card drivers

It's a good idea to keep all of your system drivers up to date.

    Thanks Demon,

I agree, there is something very strange about this problem,no least that things go on quite happily for two weeks or so then out of the blue,no internet/no local area connection/full re-install of drivers required for reconnection.

This might sound glib but its like a "pacman" just gobbled the bloody thing up.

Chorus are doing their best to sound like they know whats wrong but they're not convincing.

My graphics card drivers are bang up to date.

    Thanks again Demon.

it is strange and without seeing your psyical setup its all guess work, but is chorus the only change since bt was working fine, did you install progs, change cables?, is zone alarm set to auto lock the internet?
type msconfig into run, see if anything strange to you is running,
    try a diff. browser...

    Thanks Sorgan,

Chorus is the only change effectivly from landline to cable.Still using the old USB cable from modem to case.My Browser is Opera and has been for months. With regard th Z.A the Automatic Internet Lock is Disabled.

I've checked my processes and programs and the only thing that looks out of place is something called "Kernel Fault ChecK" which is part of the startup program routine.I've googled it and opinions are divided as to whether it is harmful or not.I know its been there a while and did'nt cause any probs(that I know of) while I was with BT.

To go back to Chorus....their recommendation was that I update my drivers of my network card. How would I find out the brand/manufacturer of my card in order to download and install the latest drivers?

Right click on My Computer, select Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, and then scroll down to Network Adapter.

Thanks guys, but it can't find any driver updates for my 1393 Net Adapter.I'll google it and see are there any out there. Are my ZA settings that I mentioned earlier correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,984 ✭✭✭✭kippy

Sorry, lost track of this a but,
The 1393 adapter that you mention is your firewire port-which Incidently I doubt you are using to connect to the modem.

    Okay,
Are there are warnings/errors in the event log?
Right click, my computer, manage, event viewer, apps and system.

fyi:That is funny with chorus, because a while back I had trouble with the modem and having no internet connection. I used to restart the modem and everything was fine. It happens now and again but not on a large scale anymore.

Also there was problem with the modem allowing connections through the usb and the lan card. It would either let you connect through the USB or through the lan card but not on both. Never found out what the problem was cause the other guy left and i just use it now.

Google entries look like double dutch to me.I'd probably do more harm than good.Besides up until three weeks ago there was'nt a problem. This "Kernal Fault Check" process at startup looks suspicious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭Muggy Dev

Quite a few as it happens,Kippy. What am I looking for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,984 ✭✭✭✭kippy

Any of the error or warning messages may be relecant-especially TCP/IP
Driver warnings or anything to do with services not starting.....
Its tough for me to advise without seeing the log.

I've screenshot the logs and uploaded them onto photobucket if you want to take a squint.

The first link I posted up is a full set of drivers for your motherboard chipset. It will probably include a driver for your network card.

The following are definite network card drivers for your board. Might as well install both, im not sure which ones you need. It wont hurt to install both.

    Any luck?

    Hi Mountjoy,

I've installed the drivers but in truth I won't know if I've cracked it until and unless I loose my connection again.

I posted my screenshots earlier of my system and activity logs.I was just wondering whether any of them gave any clues to the problem.

One final thing......My Zone Alarm setting is "Automatic Lock is Disabled".Should this be switched "ON"?

    regards
