Reliable inkjet *not* for photo use specifically

I've more or less decided that I will do any A4 or larger printing
by sending the CF card or CD/DVD to a regular photo processing
    lab (or photobox.co.uk , etc).

What I've found is that my "fairly expensive" Canon i990 drinks ink
and the cost and inconvenience of reordering replacement ink
cartridges has driven me daft. I decided to purchase a small
Canon dye-sub printer for doing postcard sized 6x4s. Anything
bigger I'll send off to a lab since I'm too frustrated to do
A4 printing of photos economically at home.

My question is a bit unorthodox. Can anyone here recommend
a reliable inkjet which is good for document printing and the
odd webpage (where photo fidelity isn't an issue). I'd prefer
one with less ink tanks since the 7 cartridge i990 is just way
too overspecced for general usage. I'd consider a Canon, HP
or Epson. I'm not way gone on Lexmark as I've heard they
can be finnicky and not as reliable.

So I am looking for a recommendation for a printer which doesn't
need to make the cut for photo printing. It needs to have
fairly longlasting (in relative terms) black inks and probably
    a combined colour ink cartridge.
