Red circling - how legal?

    Hi there,
I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly how legal it is for your company to tell you without any prior warning that your salary has been red circled - ie. you are not entitled to any more annual pay rises, as you are on enough already ( in their opinion). I feel hard done by. I think its their way of cutting costs as they are in hard times at the mo.

    Any opinions or advice appreciated.

what does your contract say about your entitlement to an annual raise ?

I cannot imagine there is a law which entitles people to pay rises.

    thanks for the replies.
I havn't got the contract at this address at the mo, I can get it later and have a look.
I guess I was just wondering if this is common practice and apparantly it seems to be. So I either have to move up -or out- if I want my salary to increase ever again :o(

A company is perfectly entitled to refuse to raise your pay any further (within the remit of your contract). They just aren't allowed to lower it without your consent.

Are you not entitlded to an annual increase in line with inflation?

I have always considered "red-circling" to be slightly different especially in the public service. When a group of employees win a rise or concession because of 'local' bargaining or to settle a specific issue, the employer 'red circles' the application of the rise/concession to prevent similar catch-up claims from other employees doing similar work in other regions.

I think the term is "Ring fenced", and the PS QoS so awful and s****so much of the time, I'd love someone to run some juice down the wires to get things going. Yeah - a mini rant but there's so many w****** in there it's scary!!

    Is there a difference?

    Is there a difference?

Public Servants - Gardai, nurses, teachers etc.

Civil servants - office-type employees in Government departments etc.
