    hi

some shots from a walk last night.

Anyone with a well calibrated monitor looking at these? I'm having a hard time deciding if my monitor at home is too bright (flat screen), or my monitior at work (CRT) is too dark. I've tuned these on the CRT - Too dark? Too Bright? Just Right?

The last one is just right, IMO. The first two are a bit dark, especially the second one that has basically no detail at all on the bottom (at least on my monitor, which I'm pretty sure is calibrated right).

I am in the same situation, laptop & home monitor are a bit different & the work one seems to be the best.

On my work one those look fine, the first is pretty dark but the line of the road is very clear - that one looks just right to me. It looks like it could have been taken just about anywhere and I like the look of it.

The 2nd one some of the cloud looks to have a slight purple tinge to it & I dont think its as strong an image as the first. Composition wise its fine - I also like the amount of light hitting the building.

The last one is quite good - I would maybe try darkening the foreground (to the left) a bit - as that area looks a bit off to me light-wise.

I got a dual mointor set up here at home and a single monitor in work. The first two are too dark on my CRT but are ok on the tft, the last looks to be the best balanced.

I think I started a thread about monitor/colour calibration a while ago. Any other solutions out there other than buying a hardware calibrating solution? All these are kind of expensive.

theres a new device out called huey that seems quite reasonably priced and probably would suit most people's calibration needs.

i like the darkness levels in the first one, it gives it an eerie mood, which suits the photo, the third one if perfect.

id just do a bit of adjustment on the second one, maybe make the bottom a bit brighter, but if you want to keep that dark, eerie feel to it, just a bit of adjusting. like someone else said i can see a slight purple tinge at the edges of the clouds, its not too noticeable though, you could get away with it.

    hey

thanks for the inputs - looks like I may invest in one of those huey systems in the near future.

Guess thats the problem with the tft screens, things are just too bright - I wish I had space for dual 21in CRT on my desk at home.

agree the 2nd one needs some fixing, clouds are too purple.

I used flashgun on the 3rd one (and the 1st actually).

Sorry, nothing constructive to say about calibration or anything... I just seriously like those two first pictures.

I do have a helluva time trying to decide whether the home TFT, home laptop, or work laptop is the one to judge it on. What a nightmare. The problem with the laptops as well i sthat it changes depending on the angle of view too. meh.

    hi mloc

no, they where taken in wicklow town. The ruin is known as Black Castle.
"It is a ruin standing on a rocky promontory at the eastern end of the town. The castle was begun by Maurice Fitzgerald when he was granted the district in 1176, but his death a year later delayed its completion. In 1375 the castle was strengthened by William Fitzwilliam, whose descendants held the constableship for several generations. The castle was frequently attacked by the Irish and sometimes occupied by them. Early in the sixteenth century it was held by the O'Brynes, but they had to surrender, it with the town, to the forces of the Crown in 1543. Luke O'Toole invested the fortress in 1641, but was froced to raise the siege when the army of Sir Charles Coote arrived."

The Castles ruin sits just above Travelhawk Beach, where St. Patrick is said to have attempted to land. Hostile locals attacked the landing party causing one of the Saint's party to lose his front teeth!

    thanks for the comment elven.

Things sure are tough for the modern photographers!

Has anyone calibrated a TFT and CRT with the same hardware/software so that an image looks the same on both? Is it possible?

id say thats possible, i suppose thats sort of the idea behind callibration. i know the huey thing can adjust for changing lighting conditions automatically if you leave it in its stand. I want to get a bigger monitor before I order one tho, I'm liking this new dell 24" TFT.
