i can't listen to people for too long or i get sleepy, i always hated school, i completly ignore any conversation going on around me becuase i'll get frustrated if it try to listen in

worst thing is that it takes me a long time to recover, if i had a training course at work, i'd try to pay attention until i nearly pass out with the tiredness, honest to god, i have to force my eyes to stay open after about 30mins in a lecture. but i will be as i call it headwrecked for the rest of the day

it starts off as bordom, then tiredness, then having trouble telling reality from dreams, honest to god

    i have tried everything,

    coffee/caffeen tablets-worse
    iq fishoils, no difference
    more sleep-worse
    less sleep- helps a bit
    exercise- no difference
ignoring whats going on- takes about 5 mins for the sleepyness to start to lift

    had this all my life,

Have you consulted a physician or a therapist?

yeah told doctor its been happeining to me forever, but he just took blood samples

funny thing is when if i have to do something that is really complicated i have no problem at all doing it, its just listening to people that puts me to sleep.

everyone i know thinks i am some sort of genius, even my teachers did, yet i never had a clue how to answer the questions in any of the tests, sure i would never have seen them before, used to just try to figure them out, usually goe about 40-50% in all tests

I know this probably sounds silly, but how is your diet? If I dont eat well a similar thing happens me. Plenty of fruit and veg, usually in juice form, its a winner. Another thing, if you meet someone really interesting, do you still have problems listening?

i have tried all sorts of diets, healthy, unhealthy, actually i found that starving myself helps a small bit

    interesting person em...

i suppose if i wanted to know something and someone had the answer i would be able to listen to him or her for longer then usual

well 1 on 1 conversations are usually okay anyway, no one ever seems to notice that i am ignoring them, i just keep agreeing and nodding

Perhaps you are alergic to something?

Since you have been down the medical and diet route and Im guessing your not a stoner-cos there is the obvious problem if your a daily user. Then my next guess would be that it is a physiological problem and in that case you would be best advised to see a therapist as previously advised. A simple test will find the problem and then your one step from a solution.
    Best of luck.

thanks how would i go about doing that, ie who should i call, any recommendations

@Beruthiel- I dont think its a food or diet problem, i even remember having this in primary school and it only when i listen to people talking, i've been knowen to fall asleep at partys at 9-10pm!!!! , yet I could easliy stay awake all night if i am on my own trying to fix something

oh and i figet with stuff all the time, i am always picking stuff up fiddling with it for ages and leaving somewhere else, without remembering doing it.

Hope this isn't considered unhelpful, but is it beyond the boundaries of possibility that you're a bit self absorbed and incapable of being interested in anything that isn't predominantly about you?

You are describing symptoms. I don’t agree with the previous listing, because you’re looking for help and if you were an egotistic self centered person, Im sure someone would have blurted that out to you by now and you would know.
I would see a physiologist, one that a friend or family member would recommend. There is still a stigma attached to going to a shrink, so if you want to be discreet about it, you could always look them up online or the yellow book. If you’re really stuck, I have 3 cousins who have private clinics; they are all female and actually give a f-ck.

    ronanp,

maybe your right, if so is their something i can do to be less "self absorbed" when i am forcing my eyes to stay open during an essential training course at work?, i need to know because its affecting my worklife

    thanks withneill

i'll go to my g.p. again, and see if he can recommend someone

    OP,this actually sounds a little like A.D.H.D.

Far as I know,it's possible for this to develop in adults.

    Consult a psychologist.

Please don’t jump on the self diagnostic wagon, or one from anyone other than a qualified professional. Im not saying you would, however I have a few mates who have gone down this road and if they didn’t have it-they sure a heck have it now or continue life believing they have a condition, which may or may not exist.
    All the best

There was another thread here a while ago when someone suggested that the problem might be Attention Deficit Disorder. I think this could well be the same. If I was you i'd go back to the doctor and tell him you think you might have ADD. That way he might treat it like a psychological problem rather than an alergy or the like and even if it's not it may set him on the right track to finding out your problem or pointing you towards someone or something that could help.

/oops just read the post from LadyJ, i should stop opening 20 odd threads at once!

HI- I have had this problem myself but to a lesser degree. Do you fall asleep if you are given information to read? Everyone has different learning styles- ie visual, auditory or kinaesthetic. Anyway- I am predominantly a visual learner and if I have to listen too long to boring seminars/lectures or conversations I really have to force my eyes open too. So- if it is effecting you at work, I suggest you tell the presenters at work to include a few visuals to keep you interested. Take heart- it may not be you that has the problem. I do agree with having a healthy diet and carbo-loading at lunch time is just a bad idea if you have an afternoon meeting. Anyway- if you fall asleep and are visually stimulated then none of this will relate to you so I will stop my little rant- Good Luck-
