There is much to admire in Zidane's headbutt, quick, unexpected kinda reminds you of Duncan Ferguson in his prime. Why go for the Italians chest though?
Any other greatest headbutt ever contenders?
What can you do to avoid getting headbutted?

A few years ago, when I was practicing a traditional martial art, we would occasionally practice more or less the exact thing that Zidane did last night. The rationalisation for why exactly we were headbutting one another in the chest seemed to change from week to week. Sometimes it was because "This is just a safe way of training headbutts so we don't break any noses", other times someone or other would suggest that this was some super-ipmroved sternum-cracking headbutt. My favourite justification was that because developing big circular bruises on your chest helped "build spirit".

Ah... the good old days. Or, more accurately, the completely ridiculous old days...

As to why Zidane picked his chest instead of his face: I wonder whether there he was even thinking on that rational level in the first place. At the end of the day, if he was thinking straight then he might have realised that world cup finals, intense media scrutiny and headbutts are not a winning combination.

damn you dave, i was gopnna post this thread but you beat me to it.

was really impressed that he managed to knock the guy over with a chest headbutt.

don't mean to spread hearsay but apparently the victim slagged off zidane's ma and while this may seem petty and schoolboy-ish, it turns out zidane's mother is critically ill in hospital and was checked in the day of the game, so i guess he picked the wrong ma to slag.

Let your attacker think that he is going to get you. Don't move an inch...you don't want him slowing down.

Then at the last second all you do is bend your knees a small bit. The result? You attacker will hit you full force in the forehead with his nose. More than likely this will break his nose, best bit? You did nothing...you just let him hit you!
