Just tried to sign up for Gmail but it tells you that to do this you either need to be invited by another Gmail user or via your mobile. Any idea why its this way, and the mobile route seems to be a non starter as they dont list the Irish networks.

    Cheers Cubix

Its a good mechanism to prevent spammers and other undesirables using scripts/bots etc to automatically sign up new accounts over and over.

Cubix did you get a GMail or Googlemail account? I got my invite from an @gmail person and I ended up with @googlemail.com subsequent people I have invited also have got @googlemail.com rather than @gmail.com.

Sending an email to joebloggs@gmail.com is the same as sending it to joebloggs@googlemail.com and vice versa. However having your email arrive to your recipient with @gmail.com is much more stylish IMO. As a result of this I still use my @yahoo.co.uk mail more than my gmail now. Also for anyone registering a yahoo email you will automatically get an @co.uk account as I did

Change the URL in the signup page from http://edit.europe.yahoo.com/config/eval_register?.intl=uk&new=1&.done=&.src=ym&partner=&.p=&promo=&.last=

to intl=ie for Ireland, and subseguently a joebloggs@yahoo.ie email account.

This happens if you have a UK IP address. Google are in dispute with some company in the UK over use of the Gmail name.

In Settings can you not just add _____@gmail.com as the address to show ? I know it looks for verificationt thats your email address but you said the verificatio email will go to googlemail addy ?

you can then set it as default to

Netwhizkid: UTV/NTL by any chance? It doesn't matter if you get a googlemail address anyway, mail sent to your username @ gmail.com will still be delivered to you.

edit: oh hold on, I vaguely remember you saying that you had some kind of satellite connection due to the lack of dsl in your area. The sat isp probably peers with teh interweb in the UK.

Yeah, I have a weird IP alright, BT Anytime dial-up for the uplink with an Irish Esat Ip and a Skydsl German IP for download. Some websites recognise me as being on an Irish IP but the majority thinks I'm in Berlin as it is where the connection connects to the rest of the world. all my pop-ups are in German etc. :D Maybe that explains my @googlemail.com phenomenon
