Replacement Car Key

    Hey there,

Just got a car from my brother and he didn't have a spare key with it. 1998 VW polo. I want to get one just to safe in case anything goes wrong. I've been told i have to go back to the dealer to get one and leave it with them to be coded.
Any way around this and how much is it going to cost? Is there variations between dealers prices for this?
Any recommendations in either Kilkenny or Cork area?

    Thanks

    HK

Main dealer is the simplest option but also the most expensive. Some non-franchise repairers can do this but not all. Basically ring around and see who does and who doesn't.

I know of a company called Steve-Guard (01 836 6699) who specialise in replacement keys and car security. You could try them.

Would cost around €80 - 100 i reckon. You could get the key cut for about €15 if its just for opening doors. it won't start the car. Coding the chip is the expensive bit. Go main dealer - Laharts in kilkenny possibly,

If the polo hasn't got an immobiliser/remote locking you can probably just get one cut cheaply. If it has, its going to be pricey.

I got a spare key done for my car last week,it was 20 for the uncut key and was gonna cost 60 for it to be coded in the dealers, I went to get it cut and the place i got it done had a machine to code the key off my other key and only cost me a tenner:cool:

Where was that trivium? What type of car was it? Would a 1998 volkswagan polo have an immobiliser?

Check your current key Viper - if it has 'W3' stamped on the blade near the head then you cant get it copied AFAIK as it has a rolling code. As your Polo is 1998 then I think you may be OK and be able to do what trivium suggests.

Polo's from 96 on have imobilisers. The key definetly needs coding. Is it an outer track or inner track key? outer is easier to cut and hence cheaper. €15-20 for the key and a main dealer will charge an hours labour to code it
